Health Promotion Reflection

John Schaefer
Title of work Sample:

Health Promotion Standards # 1 Advocacy

Date completed:

2015 - Spring Semester

WORK SAMPLE
This work sample was a presentation integrating dance, the ACSM 7-minute HICT
program, and Yoga Poses for stretching. The main content of the presentation was from the
American College of Sports Medicine recommending a 7-Minute HICT exercise for time
compressed people to assist in maintaining their health.
This presentation was made to a class of 23 male and female students. I was advocating for
regular exercise even when you feel time compressed. I was advocating for exercise throughout
all stages of your life. This is the workout that I am doing on 3-5 time per week
.
Health Promotion Standard Alignment
I am aligning this experience with Health Promotion Standard #1: The health promoter
understands, responds to, and interacts with the larger political, social, economic, legal, and cultural
context that affects health promotions.
This lesson was an advocating for maintaining exercise for a lifetime even though we become
more time compressed as we accept our responsibilities throughout life. Exercise may be the best magic
bullet we have that allows us to live a full, long, and interesting life. Active people seem to live longer
and have more fun. In my work sample I used an illustration of Time Compression as I have experienced
throughout life. My experience is no different than what most college graduates will experience. In
summary, a student may have 3 hours a day of free time for themselves; when they graduate, they will get
a job, this will cut down on the three hours a day of free time; after a job, comes a spouse; this will
further cut down their free time; after a spouse, come a house & lawn, even further cutting down fee time;
then come children, which will cut even more of their free time; leaving them may 15 minutes a day they
will have to themselves. It is in these 15 minutes a day that the 7-minute HICT exercise can be done
helping to maintain their health and vigor.
To reinforce the necessity of exercise I drew out a graph showing Age Related Decline from age
20 to age 90. I then asked where they would rather be when looking out on the chart. All agreed they
would rather be 20 years old rather than 73 yers old when looking at the chart. Particularly when they
were told that a more rapid age-related-decline starts at around 75 years of age.

Health and Physical Educations Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment

KS1.d. Demonstrates Knowledge of Resources

My experience with this class reinforced previous learnings, knowing your resources is
important and you never know who and when you will need to be able to interface with
someone, and you never know who may be your resource someday. You also have to be willing
to be a resource for other individuals when circumstances arise.
My resources for this class were: Kim Jasper who arranged the time I could have Bo
Ryan Court; Kurt Fatzinjer was willing to also arrange equipment for the class; Patti Kruser
helped me by scheduling the time to put down the seats in Bo Ryan court. The seats were needed
for the Step-up exercise in the 7-minute HICT. Delores Trumpy assisted with checking out and in
the Yoga mats form the HHP area. Derek Jack put down the seats while I observed the process
and he also assisted with obtaining an extension cord to play the music for the 7-minute
Workout.

PERSONAL REFLECTION
In reflection, this teaching experience presented several important lessons for me. The first
lesson was that motivational clues are important for people that are exercising and I need to be
able to give them when I realize that people are working hard. I personally experienced this in
the client training portion of Level 1 Internship because I liked to receive these motivational
clues. Motivational clues do not come easy for me and I will need to develop the skill. It is
important to me that the motivational clues are sincere and not preprogrammed into the class.
Insincere or programmed motivational clues are a turn off for me.
A second lesson: I have more confidence in teaching exercise classes to a considerably
younger group of male and female athletes. I was apprehensive about teaching the class on
exercise to this group because there were many athletes in the class and I thought that they would
find the exercise to easy and take a lackadaisical attitude towards the lesson and me. After all, he
is old, what can he do? After the class, several individuals approached me and commented that
they did not believe that the exercise would be that hard and that they had fun during the class.
This helped my self-confidence.
A motivation clue for me was when I was asked after class, You really do that every
day? I answered Yes I did. This comment will help me stick to the schedule because I will
want to be true to my word and do the exercise 5-7 times a week.

Self-Learning
ACSM 7-minute HICT exercise.
1. I learned four things during this presentation:
a. When doing this type of workout, I need to observe the class more and not do the
workout myself during the class period. This will allow me to pick up on bad
exercise form and avoid possible injury to the participants.
b. I need to learn the finer details of form for the common exercises such as Jumping
Jack, etc. Discussing these finer details with the class at the beginning of the
presentation may stop someone form injuring themselves.
c. The students like to have flip charts as visual aids during presentation outside the
normal classroom setting. I will purchase a flip chart stand for teaching classes
outside of the normal classroom.
d. It is hard for me to give motivational clues and I need to develop that habit of
telling someone when they are doing well.
