This online journal is about African American skin tone bias in the workplace. It explains that
there is a negative impact of privilege within similar groups in the workplace. Light skinned
women disassociate themselves from darker skinned women. They explain that an amount of
problems in the workplace come from intraracial differences about hiring and promotional
opportunities. The lighter skinned women are favored and given more work making things bias.
This makes the work area hostile, resulting in low confidence and performance. This journal is a
very good source to get information from. It is an issue from a college journal that has been
written by many experts and professors in the field. It is written in order from the history of the
problem to the possible solutions. The author did a great job making sure that both sides were
represented and there was no bias towards any side. This journal is scholarly and would be a
good source to use. At the end of the journal is a works cited, so the information given has some
credibility.

In this essay, Grace Hsiang talks about the discrimination races have between themselves. In the
Asian community, there is a line between those who accept American culture and those who
embrace the traditional Asian culture. The tradionals will speak badly of the others because they
feel that they are forgetting where they came from. Those who embrace the American culture
feel as if the others are being closed minded. This creates a barrier between people who are really
the same. This also makes it harder for the group to stand together when others outside the race
discriminate them. The essay written is part of a compilation of other essays put into chapter
regarding different subjects. It was appropriate for this essay to be put under prejudice,
discrimination, and stereotypes. The author is also very credible because she has gone through
what she has written. She knows first-hand what it is like to have others in the same race hate
each other. The one thing about this essay that makes it unusable is the length and lack of
research. I think that if the author wrote in more examples and research, then this essay would be
easier to use. It is easy to write about an experience, but that can become a biased opinion. This
essay is mostly popular because it doesnt use any other source and it is short.

This essay is written about the use of the n word in the black community and in the world.
Children usually dont know the meaning of the racist word but they know that it is meant to be
hurtful to people of color. Over time this word has become a term of endearment and several
other meanings. Black people using this word isnt an internalization of racism, but just a way to
describe themselves as a whole. It isnt until the word is used outside of the race and community
that it is considered racism. Gloria Naylor is the author who mastered in African American
studies and has studied Black women. This makes her credible because she has some scholarly
knowledge of the race, and the essay is written about her experience being called the n word.
This is a very usable source because it gives another view on how African Americans can come
together despite differences. Compared to the other sources, this essay gives more information
for my subject. However, this article is a little bias because it only gives the side of the African
Americans. There are no inputs from someone outside of the race. The goal of this essay was to
explain that words can take on a meaning depending on who uses them, and their purpose.

The movie Dark Girls was about the barrier that has been created between women of color and
other races. Even though slavery and the fight for civil rights has ended, our world still values
the approximate amount of whiteness a person has. When we were young, we were shown
images that made us believe that way. Everything pure and clean happens in the day (white),
while everything bad is associated with black. With this being true, women of color have to try
harder than those with lighter skin because they are stereotyped as being ugly and insignificant.
This is a serious problem that effects not only African Americans, but other races too. This movie
was the best information source out of them all. The many interviews with people of color and
not of color made this film unbiased and very informational. Interviews were given to celebrities
like Viola Davis, and also to black men and women from the streets. The information they had to
give was very helpful. Hearing Violas story was important because she is a dark skinned actress
who has prevailed in her career and knew firsthand what it was like to not be picked because of
her skin color. Not only did this interview talk about the difference between black and white
Americans, but also between dark and light skinned African Americans.

Skin Deep is about the different opportunities presented and the different lifestyles lighter
skinned people have over the darker skinned. The facts that dark skinned African Americans take
longer to get married than lighter skinned and that actresses with light skin are favored, is talked
about also. Although white or light skinned people act as though they do not discriminate, skin
tone has become a factor in life. This book is somewhat of a useful source. It doesnt focus on
just African Americans so it might be difficult to find specific information. The authors are

credible teachers and researchers who have experience in the field of race. There is some useful
information here, but it will be hard to locate. The other sources that I found would be a whole
lot more helpful to me and my essay. I dont see myself using this information in my paper
because it doesnt focus on media, but it does have some important supporting information.
