Anticipatory Set (Connection/Motivation)
Begin by asking the children if they have ever been to a pizzeria. Ask the children describe what
they saw and did. Tell the children that today S class is going to be a pizzeria and that we are
going to make and eat yummy pizzas.
Instruction/Mini Lesson
Introduce the recipe and drill the word recipe. Show the children where the ingredients are
listed and drill the word ingredient. Go through each ingredient and briefly discuss the
nutritional value of the ingredient. Go through the instructions once, then demonstrate the step-
by-step process (1. Roll out the dough. 2. Spoon the pizza sauce. 3. Sprinkle the cheese. 4.
Choose your toppings. 4. Bake. 5. Enjoy!)
Guided Participation
Have the children wash their hands and sit at clean tables. Pass out paper plates with small
amounts of dough on each. Place ingredients in the middle of each table. Read the steps out one
by one and have the kids complete each step together. Have the children carefully place their
plates in a safe area, then clean up and wash hands. While the children are engaged in another
activity, have an adult bake all the pizzas and have them ready for lunch.

Supporting children with

identified delays or
disabilities
For children with delays, have
them team up with a friend or
teacher when measuring and
preparing their pizza.

Assessment of Student
Have the children make a paper
pizza in the art corner. Ask the
children to discuss the process
and names of the ingredients for
making a pizza.

Language Learning
Review the ingredients and
recipe instructions the next
day. Read a book about
making pizza and review
the vocabulary.

Supporting English Language Learners

The exciting and novel nature of this activity will help hold the
attention of ELL learners. Cooking is a great multimodal way
for ELL learners to learn the names of new ingredients. Be sure
to speak clearly and have all the children practice the names of
the ingredients being used.

Follow up/Extension activities Find books about cooking, pizzerias, and nutrition.
