Unit Summary

This unit will integrate Digital Technologies with History to see students completing meaningful learning in both subjects. Students will learn to
use various digital technology in order to present information they have researched on the topic on ANZAC Day. Students will start by learning
online safety and work their way through a series of lesson in which they will learn the use of digital technologies then using these to learn &
present information about ANZAC Day. Each lesson consists of Technology (digital) and History in an integrated manner.

different peripheral devices to display information to others, for example using a mobile device, interactive whiteboard or a data
projector to present information
recognising that images and music can be transferred from a mobile device to a computer, for example using a cable to connect a camera
and computer to upload images for a photo story
History

Days and weeks celebrated or commemorated in Australia (including Australia Day, ANZAC Day, Harmony Week, National Reconciliation Week,

Professional
Learning

While some students may have proficient knowledge and skills with digital technologies this unit is designed in a way that will
cater for students who have no prior knowledge and will strengthen the skills of the students with higher knowledge while
using this knowledge to peer teach.
Various YouTube clips have been placed as resources on the website http://digitaltechnologiesres.weebly.com/teacher-page--unit-ideas.html these may be useful if you are unsure of the use of some of the digital technology.
The CyberSmart website has cyber safety professional development. You can create an account here and complete it. This link
will also take you to my blog if you would like an overview of what I found about the course.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Provision of scaffolded and largely teacher led activities as a model

Processing of knowledge and skills revisited regularly throughout unit

Student led and centered practical experiments to promote engagement and authentic learning

Guided discussion and questioning

Peer teaching system for research time, small group/pair work, and presentation to class

Focus on investigating, designing and creating tasks

Teaching and Learning Activities

Lesson 1
Lesson 1 will be used as an introduction to cyber safety. This course by the CyberSmart website will be used. Students could work
individually or in pairs for this activity. If this is unavailable use this lesson to have class discussions around the different things we
can do online (send emails, research information, download images etc) and the safety issues associated.

Lesson 2
In this lesson students will practice logging into the computers, connecting a mouse, and opening a web browser and will learn how
to safely research information online (recap learning from cyber smart course). Students will research ANZAC Day, where it started,
what it is, who was involved. Students will record this information in History books.

Lesson 3
In lesson 3 explicitly teach the use of a word processing software such as Microsoft word. Have students create a mind map or
other format containing the overview of ANZAC Day information they researched in last lesson. Give students time to get
information typed into document. Monitor. Teach students how to save and print their document.

Lesson 4
Students use their printed document (mind map or similar) and have a discussion as a whole class on what they found. Share
information on the whiteboard. Students decide what aspect of ANZAC Day they would like to do their research project on (life at
war, events surrounding ANZAC Day battle, Life at home, what ANZAC Day means to us today).

Lesson 5
Student will practice their web browsing skills to find information regarding their chosen aspect of ANZAC Day. Students will record
information into History books. Early finishers can share ideas with the teacher then start writing up their report into a word
processing document.

Lesson 6
Start this lesson by explicitly teaching students how to send an email. Have students create an email with their first name and
email it to a class/teacher email address. Students should continue writing up report using word processing. Once they have a
completed draft of their text and their previous email has been checked off have students email that to teacher for marking. Any
students who did not successfully send their email through need extra support.

Lesson 7

In this lesson students will learn to download images from either the internet or a digital camera or scanner. Students who want to
draw their own pictures to go with the text can do so at the start of this lesson while those who are wanting to download a
picture/pictures from the internet can start to find the images they would like. Have students come together as a whole class group
and teach how to download an image from the internet (remember to explain use of others work, online safety) and insert it into a
document, then teach how to scan or photograph a drawing and upload those to the computer then into the document. When happy
with students understanding allow students to complete these tasks into word processing documents.

Lesson 8
The start of lesson 8 will be used to teach students how to use a presentation program. Students will have an option of what they
want to use to present their research but it will be on the interactive whiteboard. Students can work in groups for the program they
have chosen to support one another with teacher guidance. Programs could include PowerPoint, Prezi and so forth.

Lesson 9
Students will use this lesson to finish presentations and seek help where needed. Extension could include adding voice over.

Lesson 10
Students will present their research project using the interactive whiteboard.

Accommodations for Diverse Needs

Students with
Special Needs
English as a Second
Language (ESL)
Students
Gifted Students
Indigenous Groups

Students with special needs may need to work with peers/buddies or teachers aide if required. Small group work
should also facilitate full participation in all activities and encourage engagement and understanding.
Pair ESL students with peers/buddies whose first language is English. Work in small groups or pairs.

Open ended tasks provided throughout the unit for students to extend themselves. Continue to provide high
expectations.
Allocate time within lessons for indigenous storytelling around the topic of sustainable living.
