From the Principal...

Tn koutou katoa,
It has been great to see the wide range
of activities and experiences on offer
around the school that have been outside of the core curriculum.
We have had Rippa Rugby, Kapa Haka,
Year 4-6 Class Challenge Games and
Sports competition at lunchtimes, Year
1-3 class games at lunchtimes, a Nail
Polish club, Tackle Rugby, Student
Leaders arranging the Pink Shirt Day and more. It is great to
see our children positively engaged and being broadened
and extended in their time here at school. I am a strong
advocate for the holistic education of our children.
It is important that we don't lose sight of all the learning
that takes place during play, sports, problem solving,
working on shared projects and so on and that we don't
underestimate the importance of this learning to the
success of our children. Yes, Reading, Writing and Maths
are very important, but on their own they will not be enough
to succeed in the complex and diverse world of today, let
alone tomorrow.
Values Consultation 2015: The top 5 Values selected by
the school community were Integrity, Inquiry/Curiosity,
Respect, Creativity/Innovation and Perseverance. We have
since combined the staff, community and student reflections
and will present some draft Values Statements back to the
community shortly for your feedback before moving on to our
2015 Community Consultation Survey.
This survey will seek a wide range of information on
the school including specific questions about our
curriculum, the vision for KKPS going forward and
what we are generally doing well and what you think we
could do better. Please make every effort to get this
completed when it comes out next week, we would love
a high response rate.

Unpacking the Key Competencies of the New Zealand Curriculum

Using Language, Symbols and Texts

Using language, symbols, and texts is about the different
ways to communicate and understand information,
experiences and ideas. This includes the foundation skills of
literacy and numeracy, but is much more. Its about how we
make meaning of things, based on what we already know, or
think we know, and our experiences and beliefs.
There are many examples of this key competency in action
at school, such as:
Maths where numbers and symbols communicate ideas
Dance, drama and kapa haka where your child is learning about movement as a language, or way of communicating
Science where your child is learning how to think, read
and write in scientific language, investigating, gathering
evidence, drawing conclusions and justifying explanation

Things to try at home

Check whether your child understands the meaning in different types of texts or languages. If they tell you that something is so, ask them how they know, or what makes them
think that. This can help them think about other possibilities,
which is what the teachers do at school as well

When you flick though the junk mail or watch television together, talk about the language the advertisers have used

Reminder about Options

Options for Y4, 5 and 6 children started this term and they are proving
to be a great success. Children have choices about extra activities
they wish to be part of in a range of areas. To assist with resourcing
these options there is a charge of $20 per child ($5 per option). Thank
you to those parents and caregivers who have made Options payments already; if you haven't these need to be paid as soon as possible please. Payments can be made directly using the on-line banking
deposit to the school bank account 123091-0080301-01. Please include Name, Room Number and the word 'Options' as your reference,
or send payment to the office. A BIG THANK YOU to those people
who have donated time and equipment for the cooking option
group - we now have a well stocked kitchen.

on display in our library over the next two
weeks for your children to read and enjoy.
Thank you to our PTA who assisted in running
the Fair and contributed to its success.
