The Passive Voice
The Passive of the Present Simple and Present
Continuous

Use of Passive
when the focus is on the action
it is not important or not known who or what is
performing the action.
Example: My bike was stolen.
In the example above, the focus is on the fact that my bike was
stolen. I do not know who did it.

Why do we need passive?

Steps in forming a passive sentence


1. Identify the S and O

2. Identify the tense of the V

3. Move the O to the beginning of the sentence

4. Apply the rule: be + past participle (-ed/irreg.)


Note: be is in the same tense as V under 2, MV is in the pp

5. Add the S in a by phrase to the end of the sentence, if required

Steps in forming an active sentence


1. Identify the S and O

2. Identify the tense of be

3. Move the S to the end of the sentence

4. Put the MV in the same tense as be under 2

5. Add the S (from the by phrase) to the beginning of the sentence

Present Simple in the Passive

Sentences with 2 Os
If you have 2 Os, you can have 2 sentences in the passive
with 2 different Ss
