Summary 16/11/14

Planning for learning

Lesson followed on from a story they read about Cyclops the week before. The SS had prior knowledge of
the story.
Positive points.
-

Much better movement around the classroom. Gave out the materials.
Ss were motivated by the role play and using the puppets.
Visual materials are well made.
Objective is read out.
What is a comic strip conversation? Modeled on the board. Drew a picture and asked the Ss to give
Hamda the dialogue to write. She wrote it on the board.
- Differentiation of activity of work for each group. Still not asking the groups to repeat what they have
to do. You need to do this so that you know that they are able to do it without asking again.
- Materials for group work. Did you make enough? Some people were not able to do anything because
the group was too big. Maybe do it in pairs. This will give the Ss more ownership of the what they
produce.
Pace of lesson
- It moved along quite well although the comic strip dragged on too long. Ss got really noisy although
still remained on task.
- What about setting a time limit? Do you think that would make things easier for you and the Ss?
Plenary
- What did you learn today?
Management of learning
- Good clear instructions Put the puppets away please?
- Was the level was appropriate for the ESL Ss. Yes it was. The ESL Ss were able to get a lot out of
the lesson. Was there any differentiation for the MA or HA Ss?
- Much better control of the class. Told Ss to listen. This was done really well. You were the teacher.
You showed no fear and made them listen to you. Make sure you are consistent. Dont let them get
away with it. Be positive to the groups who are listening. E.g. Look at the group. They are
listening. I love your comments.
- 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Stop talking and hands up. This is better but still took too long. Next time just praise the
good groups and then stop and wait.

Suggestions

Suggestions from first lesson

Teacher interaction
- Where were you standing most of the time? Try not to be at the front of the class. You can
move around the classroom it makes the Ss feel you are approachable. You moved around
a lot more this lesson. You could even stand in another place. During the activity you were
moving around helping them. Much better.
- How do you feel when you are teaching?

Planning for learning

- Is there enough challenge for them? You need to think about differentiation. What can you
do for those Ss who are higher and lower abilities. Talk to your MST about it. What can we
do? Differentiation certainly gave them enough challenge.
- Why did you give 1 paper for 6 people? Is there another way you could have done this?
- There were English as Second Language SS in the class. They were lost. How can you
accommodate them? What can you do to help them learn? Asked each group for an answer,
even the ESL group. This is a much better approach compared to last lesson.
Timing.. You need to make a decision as a teacher to make sure your objectives are met.

Classroom Management
- Behaviour Management Does the word excellent really mean anything for the Ss.
- Try- I like the way the blue group sits quietly. Still using excellent/good. Need to work on this
area although you did say that Look, the group is sitting quietly. Can we all be like that
Use language. Can you see the way the blue group is sitting? Can you be like them?
- Make sure they are all watching/listening to you. This was much better done this time. You
made sure that they were listening.
- Be careful punishing Ss. What can you do to make it more positive. You started yelling and
they were lost. You need to think of another strategy.ff
