Introduction:

This study is about comparison between new techniques to make construction process faster
and traditional method for construction building.
The field of construction has a lot of constraints such as time management, cost and quality.
Adding to the classical constraints (time, cost and quality), outdoor manufacturing has its
unique challenges such as environment, location, local policies and regulations. As an example
of environmental constraint cold and hot weather can be considered. Cold and hot weather
may affect concrete strength. Some policies do not allow contractors to pour concrete except
in certain times during the day. Construction projects are mainly unique in nature, because of
specific requirements for every project activity. Hence, the managing process for these outdoor
projects can be exceptionally more demanding than the indoor projects. In most cases the
indoor project doesnt have constrains of outdoor construction.

1.2

Scope:

This report is the final draft of the structural design of residential building which located in
California, and consists of ground floor plus two typical floors and penthouse.
The building was designed as concrete structure and as fiberglass one.
The data contained in this report is the final results of a study of the structural elements of the
various components of the project. The preparation of this study was the first work of
analytical model (Analytical Model) of the building assuming approximate sections for its
different components, using of the data resulting from the structural analysis of this model to
determine the sections of all elements of the project, and identify design criteria that have been
taken into account when preparing the final design of the project.

1.3

Design Methodology:

The Structural system for the building is a reinforced concrete structure and fiberglass one
with solid slabs and beams. The Columns are main structural elements to resist Gravity forces.
Raft foundation system is proposed to meet the bearing pressure requirements.
ETABS and Sap2000 programs are used for the three dimensional analysis of the frames. The
self-weight of the structure is directly calculated by assigning shells, superimposed dead and
live loads applied as mentioned in the design criteria.
In support of the computer program mentioned above, excel sheets are used for the deflection
calculations of the beams and the slab design etc. Loads and material strengths are as per
design criteria.

Design Criteria

STRUCTURAL DESIGN CRITERIA

1. CODES AND STANDARDS
Structural design and material selection will conform to the requirements of the latest codes).
Metric versions of codes and standards, where published, will be used. Specifically, structural
design will conform to the following:
- ACI 318 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete and Commentary (ACI 318R), 2005
- AISC Steel Construction Manual, 3rd Edition (LRFD), 9th Edition (ASD), and 13th Edition
(LRFD and ASD)
- ASCE 7-05: Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures, 2005
- ASTM: American Society for Testing and Materials, latest editions for the designations
referenced throughout this Guideline
- IBC: International Building Code, 2006
- PCA: Strength Design of Anchorage to Concrete, latest edition
2. DESIGN LOADS
a) Dead Loads
- Finishing load = 1.5 kN/m2
- 200mm wall = 18.90 kN/m
b) Live Loads
Rooms = 2 .00 kN/m2
Corridors/ passage =3.83 kN/m2
Stair case = 5.0 kN/m2

3. MATERIAL PROPERTIES
a) Concrete Compressive Strength
fc' = 28 MPa (for foundations )
fc' = 28 MPa (for beams and suspended slabs )
fc' =28 MPa (for shear walls and columns )
b) Steel Reinforcement
Fy = 420 MPa (for all reinforcing steel)
c) Soil
Allowable bearing capacity (A.B.C)
Main building =250 KN/m2
Modulus of Sub grade Reaction, ks= 120 X A.B.C

4. LOAD COMBINATIONS FOR STRENGTH DESIGN

As per ASCE 7-10 Section 2.3
5. ULTIMATE LOAD COMBINATIONS FOR FOUNDATION DESIGN
As per ASCE 7-10 Section 2.4

6. DESIGN SOFTWARE
The following software were used for the Structural Analysis and Design of this project.
i. ETABS Nonlinear Version 13.0 by Computers and Structures, Inc.
ii. Sap2000 Nonlinear Version 17.0 by Computers and Structures, Inc.
iii. Microsoft office Excel 2010 by Microsoft Corporation
