Lesson1:Papermaking
Goals:Studentswillbeintroducedtothehistoryofpaperandpapermaking.Indoingsotheywilllearntomaketheir
ownpaper.Studentswilllearnwhyplantsmakethebestpaper.

Introduction:Thislessonwillbeginbyprovidingtheclasswithabriefhistoryofpaper,fromtheearlypapyrus
papertothatofJapanesericepaper.FromthatIwillshowtheclassexamplesofpaperthatIhavemade,whichwill
thensegueintotheclassproducingtheirownhandmadepaper.
Activity:MakingtheMould
Takeoldpictureframesandremoveglass
Ifusingscreen,pullittautalongeachsideandstapleittosecureitthentrimextrascreenoff.Ifusing
nylons,slidetheframeintothenylon,cutaholeinthebackofthescreen,andstaplethenylontothesides
oftheframetokeepittaut.
Thesescreenscanbeusedforscreenprinting,althoughtheywontbeashighquality,theywillstillbe
helpfulinlearningthegeneraltechnique.
SpongeActivity:
Tobeginpreparingfornextclass,studentswillbegincuttingpaperintosmallsquares.Thesesquarescan
bestoredinoldicecreampailsuntilnextclass.
Evaluations:Reviewconceptsandterminologywithquestionandanswer.
Lesson2:Papermaking
Goals:Studentswillmaketheirownpaper.
Vocabulary:Slurry,couche,deckleandmould,pulp.
Materials:
alargebowlorplasticbasin
scrapbook
blenders(asmanyasavailable)
spoon
mouldanddecklesponges
cups
Introduction:Theclasswillbeginwithexamplesofhandmadepaperthatwasshownintheclassprevious.ThenI
willdirectquestionstotheclassastothemouldanddecklesusedinpapermaking.
Activity:

Tearorcutpaperintosmallsquaresandplacethemintoablender(dontworrytoomuchaboutbeing
precise,aboutoneinchbyoneinchwillworkwell).
Pourtapwateroverpaperfillingtheblenderto3/4full.Blendandpourintolargebowlorbasin.Thisis
calledpulp.
Repeatmakingmorepulp.
Whenallthepulpisinthebasin,addmorewateruntilthebasinis3/4fullandstir.Thismixtureiscalled
slurry.
Placethemouldintoaseparatecontainer,suchasalasagnedish,withthescreenornylonUP.Usingcups,
pourtheslurryoverthemould,ensurethattheslurrycoversthescreencompletely.
Whenthescreenisevenlycovered,liftthepapermakeroutofthewaterandholditabovethecontainerto
drain.
Whenitstopsdrippingremovethedeckle.
Turnthemouldupsidedownontoafewlayersofcloth.Gentlydab(DONOTRUB)thebackofthescreen
withaspongetoremovemorewater.
Slowlyliftthemould,leavingthesheetofpaperonthecloth.
Stirtheslurrytomakemorepaper.
Leavenewlymadesheetstodryovernight.Whenthepaperisdrygentlyliftonecornerandpeelthepaper
fromthecloth.
Extensions:Adddriedflowers,piecesoftext,piecesofthreadoryarn,orcoloredtissueintotheslurry.
Embossthepaper.Placebuttons,keys,orothersmallitemsontheclothbeforeflippingthemouldontothe
cloths.Forcolouredpaperaddafewdropsoffoodcoloringordyetothepulpintheblenderormixin
colouredtissuepaper.Tomakeshapes,setacookiecutteronthescreen.Useacuptoscooptheslurryfrom
thebasinintothecookiecutter.Whenitstopsdrippingremovethecookiecutterandcontinue.

Lesson3:PulpPainting
Goals:usingtheleftoverpulpfrommakingpaper,thestudentswillpaintwiththepulpcreatingapiecethatwill
portraywhattheyfeelatthatmomentwhilelisteningtoaparticularpieceofmusic.

squeezebottles
pulp
thincloth
sponges
Introduction:
Thislessonwillcommencewithalineofquestioningreinforcingwhatwaslearnedinthepreviousclassaboutpulp
andslurry.ThenIwouldasktheclasswhatcouldbedonewiththeleftoverpulp.OnlythenIwouldsuggest
paintingwiththepulp.OnasidetrackIwouldturnonsomemusicandaskthestudentstolistentothesongand
thinkofhowitmadethemfeel.Themusicwouldcommenceonceagainandsowouldthepainting.Example:Ifyou
weretoturnonslowclassicalmusic(BeethovenorVivaldi)theclassmaysaytheyfeelrelaxedandhappy.They
couldpaintusingyellowsandbluesandgreens.Ifyouweretoturnonsomethingfasterandmorerambunctioussuch
astheWilliamTellOverturetheclassmaybecomeexcitedandcouldpaintusingreds,pinksandoranges.

Activities:
Scooptheleftoverpulpintosqueezebottles.
Addmorewatersothatthepulpcaneasilycomethroughtheholeinthebottleandsomecolour.
Laythescreeninthelargebasin.
Dampenthethinclothandlayitoverthescreen.
Turnonthemusic.Pulppaintingcanthencommence.
Oncethestudentfeelstheirpaintingiscompletehavethemlifttheclothoffthescreenandhangittodry.
(Closure)Aftertheclassisdonehavetheclassdiscusshowthemusicmadethemfeelandhowtheyrepresentedthat
intheirpaintings.Havetheclassdiscoveranysimilaritiesintheirpainting.
Extension:Thisactivitycanbetriedwithvariousstylesofmusic,classic,rocknroll,countryorpop.

Introduction:
InEnglishclassstudentswillhavealreadycutouttheirpaperandusedittomakeabookexplaininghowtomake
paper.Studentsarenowgoingtobindtheirpaperintoabook.
Activities:
Usingtheruler,measurethesizeofthehandmadepaper.Trytomakethepaperaslargeaspossiblegiven
thesizeoftheframe.Cutthepapertobearectangle.Keepthescraps.
Withthesemeasurementsadd2.5cmtothelengthand4.5forthewidth.(Ex.10cm*12.5cmadd2.5cm=
12.5cm*15cm)Withthesenewdimensionsmeasureanddrawthemontothecardboard.Dothis2times
becauseyoustillneedafrontandabackcoverandcutoutthecardboard.
Fold2cmofthecardboardover,thiswillallowyoutobindthebooks.Placethepaperbetweenthecovers.
Itmaybewisetogethelpforthispart.Hammerholesinbetweenthenarrowstripofcardboardandthe
cover.Thenumberofholeswilldependonthelengthofthebook.Takeaneedleandyarnandcarefully
darnthebooktogether.Tieofftheendoftheyarntightlyandyourbookisbound.
