15 minutes

Students will investigate relationships between weather


phenomena and human activity.
14. Students will test fabrics and clothing designs to choose
those with characteristics that most effectively meet the
challenge of particular weather conditions; e.g., water
resistance, wind resistance, protection from cold.
Students will:
Identify which fabrics (nylon, light polyester, and
fleece) protect best against cold and wind.
Synthesize data from the experiment to create a
clothing design based around specific weather
conditions.
Designing a costume for a super hero who deals with
certain weather conditions.
Discussion of the importance of knowing which fabrics
meet the challenge of particular weather conditions as
closure.
2 fans
4 pieces of each type of fabric, labeled
Instruction hand out (one for each student)
Ice cubes
Pictures of people poorly dressed for the weather
Outline of Superhero (one for each group)

seconds, keeping it a hand length away
-place one piece of fabric on your hand (5sec)
-try the other fabrics for five seconds each.
-record how the different fabrics protected using
worksheet

Break them up into groups (predetermined by


cards):1=wind 2=cold
4 minutes at one station then gather attention by
bringing it back in five, four, three, two, one and 4
minutes at other station.
Bring it back in five, four, three, two and one have
students return to tables and sit in their groups.

important to know what types of fabrics protect against
different types of weather? (Be comfortable, so you
