Reflection:
I enjoy holding ILP meetings with my students each year. It
gives me a chance to get to know my students . I get to find
out what their interests are and what their plans are for after
high school. I also get to talk to them about where their
strengths are and where their weaknesses are.
Finding out all of this information helps me set goals with
students and adjust my class to fit their needs.

that they learn to the best of their abilities.

w I will use this knowledge to further my professional goals:

ill continue giving my students a learning style quiz so that I will know the learni

andard: 2c) Allows students different ways to demonstrate learning sensitive

multiple experiences and diversity.

urnal: I understand that students all learn in different ways and they should be
ow their learning in different ways. Though it is convenient to give my class the
signment for every student, I do let students substitute their experiences or do o
signments. One example of this would be a time when I gave my students an
signment to research a college of their choosing and write a report. I had some
udents who went on a college tour and I let them write about their experiences.
nother example would be letting my students get extra credit for tutoring. I belie
at when they tutor other students, it solidifies their learning. There are great wa
let students substitute assigned work to best fit their needs.

ow I will use this knowledge to further my professional goals:

will continue to let students substitute assigned work for other assignments or
periences. I will also try to have more ways to let students chose how they wou
ow their learning.

ndard: 2d) Creates a learning culture that encourages individual learners to

severe and advance

rnal: Students in my classes are given every opportunity to succeed. I allow th

edo quizzes and assignments until they are please with their grade. I feel that
udents grade should reflect not only their knowledge of the subject, but the wor
t they put forth in the class. My students know that even if they do horrible on a
z or test, they shouldnt throw in the towel.

en a student isnt progressing in my class and is trying their best, I individualize

Evidence: Student guided activity: Experimental Probability vs
Theoretical Probability
Reflection: This was a student guided activity from my Algebra
2 class. Students worked on their own to answer the questions
and complete the activities. After they worked on their own, they
posted their results on the board and we discussed as a class.
Students participated because they knew it was expected of
them
How I will use this knowledge to further my professional
goals:
I think its important to set expectations for students from the
beginning. They will be ready to participate in class and will do

Standard: 3b) Collaborates with students to establish a positive

learning climate of
openness, respectful interactions, support, and inquiry.
Evidence: Tracked students weekly progress and sent reports to
students and parents. Contacted students weekly to provide help.
Reflection: I feel that it is very important for a student to have
constant feedback and to know how they are doing in class. I also
feel like it is very important for the teacher to constantly check her
students progress and know the needs of those students. Keeping
track of my students weekly progress helped me to see which of
my students needed more help or an extra push to get their work
done. I invited these students to my office hours so that I could
give them individualized attention. My students know that I will
help them whenever they need help.
How I will use this to further my professional goals: I will
continue to track my students progress and to send out reports to
them. I will also continue to contact my struggling students. I
would like to find more organized methods to help me do this each
week.

Standard: 3c) Uses a variety of classroom management strategies

to effectively
maintain a positive learning environment.
Evidence: Cold Calling
Reflection: Cold calling means that I call on students even if they
havent volunteered to speak. Sometimes I assign students a
number and then use a dice to see who will answer a question for
the class and other times I just pick random students. I feel like this
method helps students focus because they feel like they need to be
accountable for their learning. Not only does this method keep
students on task, it helps them learn.
How I will use this to further my professional goals: I will
continue to use cold calling in my classroom. I feel like I need to
make it a priority at the first of the year in all of my classes so that I
make it a habit for myself and so that students will expect it.

Standard: 3d) Equitably engages students in learning by

organizing, allocating, and managing the resources of time,
space, and attention.
Evidence: Weekly Lesson Plans
Reflection: I wrote weekly lesson plans so that I could keep my
classes as organized as possible. I wrote out each activity, how
much time I expected it to take, and what materials were
needed. I also wrote learning objectives and how my students
would be assessed on those learning objectives. Doing this kept
the flow of my class and maximized my time with my students.
How I will use this to further my professional goals: I will
continue to make lesson plans for my classes. Right now Im
using power point for my lesson plans because it keeps all of my
activities together and in order.

Standard: 3e) Extends the learning environment using

technology, media, and local and global resources.
Evidence: Used online simulation from NCTM to help students
understand conics
Reflection: I really enjoy using this simulation in my math classes
to help students understand conics. I feel like this is an abstract
subject and having a tool really helps them grasp it. In this
simulation, students can manipulate how the sections are cut so
they can see how the different graphs are formed. I let students
explore on their own for a little and then give them some guided
questions to do as a class.
How I will use this to further my professional goals: I will
continue to use simulations in my classes. I think that any time a
student has a manipulative, and they are shown how to use it, it
increases their learning. I am always looking for new sites that
have these types of resources.

Standard: 3f) Encourages students to use speaking, listening,

reading, writing,
analysis, synthesis, and decision-making skills in various realworld
contexts.
Evidence: Students designed rooms using area and perimeter
Reflection: I really enjoyed this activity. It gave students a
chance to practice using their math skills in a real-world activity.
Students were required to design rooms given certain
specifications such as how much space was needed for a dance
floor or table. I feel like the students liked the activity because
they got to design and use their own creativity.
How I will use this to further my professional goals: I will
continue to use real word activities in my classroom. I feel like
these activities solidify student learning and they help students
to see how their learning can be applied. I think it is important
for students to know how they will use their knowledge in the
real world and it makes them care more about what they are
learning.

Evidence: Math Praxis Exam
Reflection: Having passed this exam, it shows that I understand the
material required for me to teach. I am confident in my knowledge
and feel that I am prepared to teach students.
How I will use this knowledge to further my professional goals:
I will continue to learn new concepts in the field of mathematics.
Doing so will help me teach the most current material to my students.

Standard: 4b) Demonstrates an awareness of the Utah Core

Standards and
references them in the short- and long-term planning.
Evidence: Scope and sequence aligned to the state core.
Reflection: I picked out the most important state standards and
then aligned my curriculum with those standards. Doing this insures
that my students will learn what they need to and will be prepared to
continue on in math.
How I will use this to further my professional goals: I will
continue to align my curriculum with the state standards. I feel that
the state standards are the best way to know what I should be
teaching my students and aligning my curriculum with those
standards will give my students the tools they need to continue on in
math.

Standard: 4c) Engages students in applying methods of inquiry and

standards of

Evidence: Journal
Journal: In math, it is key to teach students not only how to apply
concepts, but to problem solve using the concepts they have learned.
For many students, this is hard because they are used to using set
procedures to solve problems. So when they are given a problem
where they arent told how to solve it, they are lost and dont know
what to do.
As a teacher, it is my job to guide students in the right direction.
Its hard for me to let them struggle with completing a problem, but
the struggle is what helps them learn. A key thing I can ask my
students when they are stuck is What are you trying to find and
what would help you find what youre looking for. These questions
help students focus in on the problem and how they can find a
solution.
How I will use this knowledge to further my professional
goals: I will continue to ask students guiding questions when they
are problem solving. I feel it is important for them to be able to apply
methods of solving and not just take the easy way out by asking the

Standard: 4d) Uses multiple representations of concepts that

capture key ideas.
Evidence: CRA Math
Reflection: I went to a virtual conference where I learned about
Concrete, Representational, and Abstract Math(CRA). This is a
researched method that helps students see what they are learning in
three different ways to make their learning solidified. The first part is
concrete. This is where students use manipulatives to show an idea.
The second part is Representational where students use pictures and
diagrams to show the same idea. The third and last part is concrete,
where students show the same idea using formulas and equations.
Using this method helps students show what they are learning in
three different ways. This is a great method because it helps students
of all learning groups.
How I will use this knowledge to further my professional goals:
I will apply the CRA method when I can in my lessons. Doing so, will
help my students show their learning in different ways and solidify the
concepts they are learning.

accurately and meaningfully.
Evidence: Guided notes
Reflection: I use guided notes in some classes to help students
focus on the lesson and to get practice using key academic
vocabulary. I feel that the more students hear and use vocabulary,
the better they will understand it and the better they will be able to
use it.
How I will use this to further my professional goals: I will
continue to use guided notes in classes and focus on academic
vocabulary. By doing this, my students will be able to use the
vocabulary expected of them.

Standard: 5a) Designs or selects pre-assessments, formative and

summative
assessments in a variety of formats that match learning objectives
and engage the learner in demonstrating knowledge and skills.
Evidence: CIA Tests
Reflection: In order to find out if students met state objectives, I
gave a benchmark test (CIA) every 5 weeks. This test worked as a
pretest, formative, summative test. I made the test by selecting
sample questions similar to the ones on the state test that went along
with objectives the class had already learned, were learning about, and
were about to learn. This data indicated which standards my students
did well on and which standards I needed to review with them. This
test also showed me how well my students already knew about new
subjects.
How I will use this knowledge to further my professional goals:
I think having benchmark tests is a great way to see what students
know and what they need to spend more time on. I will continue to
give benchmark tests to my classes so that I will know how well they
are mastering state standards.

CIA Test results given to students in Algebra 2:

Standard: 5b) Engages students in understanding and identifying the

quality work and provides them with timely and descriptive feedback
to guide their progress in producing that work.
Evidence: Assignment Rubrics
Reflection: I used a rubric for assignments so that students would know
the expectations and what they needed to do to earn the grade that they
wanted. I believe rubrics are important so that students can do their best
before the assignment is turned in. Its important that students have
feedback after the assignment is turned in, but if they know what they
need to do before the assignment is turned in, they have a better chance
of doing their best.
How I will use this to further my professional goals: I will make
my expectations clear to students on assignments so that they know my
expectations. Using rubrics will help students do their best on
assignments.

Standard: 5C Adjusts assessment methods and makes appropriate

accommodations for English language learners, students with
disabilities, advanced students, and students who are not meeting
learning goals.
Evidence: Journal Entry
Journal: Giving assessments tells a teacher a lot about what their
students have and havent learned. However, not all students should
be assessed the same way. Some students are more advanced and
can better show their learning through a project that demonstrates
how they can apply their learning. Other students, whether they are
English language learners, have disabilities, or arent meeting
learning goals, also need to be assessed differently. It is important for
the teacher to consider what the students needs are and make
accommodations accordingly. If a student is an English language
learner, a written assessment may not assess what they know if they
are not a strong reader. In this instance, a teacher could give an oral
exam or make accommodations to the student by letting them have a
student reader. Similar accommodations can be made for students
with disabilities. It is important to address the needs of all students
when assessing them so that the teacher can truly see what her
students have learned and to make sure that student results dont

adjustments in planning and instruction.
Evidence: Collected data for Professional Learning Committees
Reflections: I attended weekly PLC meetings. I collected pre and
post data from my classes on various mathematical topics. I used
this data to see if students were learning what I wanted them to
learn. At the meetings we discussed how we could improve our
teaching and student learning.
It was very interesting to see my pre and post data for everything I
taught. I was able to see how well my students learned what I
taught and what needed to improve upon.
How I will use this knowledge to further my professional
goals:
I will continue to give pre and post tests to my students so that I can
see what they have learned.

Standard: 5e) Documents student progress and provides

descriptive feedback to
students, parents, and other stakeholders in a variety of ways.
Evidence: Weekly Student Progress Excel Document
Reflection: I kept an excel document with all my students
grades and updated it week to week. I color coded the document
to see if students were progressing or not. This helped me keep
track of individual students in my class. I sent out progress
reports using this data and made individual plans for students to
increase their grade. I feel that this was a great way to keep
track of students and help them progress in my class.
How I will use this to further my professional goals: I will
continue to keep track of students weekly progress. This helps
me remember how my students are doing so that when I talk to
them in class, I know where they are at and how I can help. Many
students dont get the help they need because there are so many
students to help, but this is one method that helps keep track of
those students.

principles and procedures.
Evidence: Sage Testing Ethics Training
Reflection:
I completed a training on testing ethics to proctor the state test. I
learned what to do while testing and what not to do. I believe this
training was important because as an educator, I have the obligation
to keep up on testing ethics.
How I will use this to further my professional goals:
I will keep up with current testing ethics and procedures.

Standard: 6a) Plans instruction based on the Utah Core

Standards.
Evidence: Core Curriculum Plan
Reflection: For the beginning of the school year, I took all of the
Utah Core Standards for Secondary Math 3 and made learning
objectives and activities that matched up. I planned out how
many days I would spend in class on the standards and how I
would assess my students for learning. This was a great way to
plan out the whole curriculum and make a plan for my students.
How I will use this to further my professional goals: I will
continue to focus on the Utah Core Standards. I think it is
important to focus on those standards so that my students will
learn what then need to. I thought this was a great way to plan
out the year and I will continue making plans for each year using a
similar method.

Standard: 6b) Individually and collaboratively selects and creates

learning experiences that are appropriate for reaching content
standards relevant to learners and based on principles of effective
instruction.
Evidence: Attended Lining up the Core Professional Development
Reflection:
I attended a Professional Development on Lining up the Core. In this
conference, I learned how to make appropriate learning objectives for
students and we discussed strategies on how to teach these learning
objectives. This has helped me focus my instruction more and find
effective ways to teach and assess my students.
How I will use this to further my Professional Goals: I will
continue to take opportunities to learn more about the core standards
and effective teaching strategies. I enjoy finding new ways to teach
students and how to make my instruction more effective.

Standard: 6c) Differentiates instruction for individuals and groups of

students by choosing appropriate strategies, accommodations, resources,
materials, sequencing, technical tools, and demonstrations of learning.
Evidence:

Standard: 6d) Creates opportunities for students to generate and

evaluate new
ideas, seek inventive solutions to problems, and create original work.
Reflection: Area Activity
Reflection: This assignment was given to me in a conference I
participated in. Students were required to find the area of each room
using any method they wanted. I think this is a great activity. It
doesnt give students much guidance so they are required to use out
of the box thinking. This is a great assignment to use with students
after teaching area so that they can extend their learning.
How I will use this knowledge to further my professional
goals: I will continue to explore and use activities that encourage
students to discover ideas and solutions on their own. Students need
practice finding solutions and not just being told how to solve
problems.

Standard: 6e) Integrates cross-disciplinary skills into instruction to

purposefully engage learners in applying content knowledge.
Evidence: Math Writing Journals
Reflection: I gave students writing prompts in class and required
them to write paragraphs explaining their thoughts. I thought this was
great because it not only gave them practice explaining ideas, but it
also gave them practice writing paragraphs for English. I think this
activity also reinforced what students knew about what they had
learned because they had to put it into words.
How I will use this to further my professional goals: I will
continue to give students writing prompts in math. I believe this lets
students apply their learning to themselves and gives them a chance
to explain what they know. I think being able to explain what they
have learned, solidifies that learning and lets the students know how
well they know the subject they are writing about.

Standard: 7a) Understands and practices a range of

developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate
instructional strategies.
Evidence: KWL
Reflection:
A KWL is a great instructional strategy to help students organize
their learning. A KWL has three parts: know, want to know, and
learned. For the first section, know, students explain what they
already know about a topic. The second section, want to know,
has students write down what they are interested in learning on
that same topic. These first two sections prepare the students to
learn and help the teacher see where they should focus their
lesson. Obviously if students already know the building blocks of
the topic, the teacher doesnt need to spend much time there and
can focus their time on new material. In the last sections, learned,
students write down what they learned during the lesson. This is a
great tool for helping students summarize their learning.
How I will use this to further my professional goals: I think
a KWL is a very useful instructional strategy. It prepares students

Standard: 7b) Uses appropriate strategies and resources to adapt

instruction and
vary his or her role to meet the needs of individuals and groups of
learners.
Evidence: Problem Experts Activity
Reflection: In this activity, students are put into groups and then
given a problem to solve. Each member of the group needs to know
how to solve the problem because after the timer goes off, groups
are rearranged and one member of each group is left to show the
next group how to solve the problem. This continues until each
person has had a chance to explain their original problem and see
the other group problems.
I like this activity because it makes students be responsible for their
own learning. Students cannot sit and let the rest of the group work
because they may be the group member responsible for teaching
the next group. During this activity, the teacher is a facilitator. The
students are the ones doing the teaching.
How I will use this to further my professional goals: I think
activities like this are great for students. I think students can show
their learning the best, when they can teach others what they know.

Standard: 7c) Analyzes student errors and misconceptions in order

to redirect,
focus, and deepen learning.
Evidence: Exit Tickets
Reflection: I use exit tickets in my classes sometimes to see what
students learned and what questions they have. At the end of class I
ask students to write down one thing they learned and turn it in
before they leave or I ask them to write down one question they have
before they leave. Both of these methods help we understand how
my class did with the material they learned. I can analyze student
answers and see if I need to reteach something or continue onto new
material. I think exit tickets are great way to assess student learning.
How I will use this to further my professional goals: I will
continue to use exit tickets and other teaching strategies to assess
student learning. It is important for a teacher to know if their
students learned what was being taught. This is a fast way to see
what misconceptions there might be and what direction I should take
the class in.

Standard: 7d) Uses a variety of instructional strategies to support

and expand each
learners communication skills.
Evidence: Group Jobs
Reflection: Group work is great way of getting students talking and
working together on a topic. I use group jobs to make sure students
feel responsible towards their group and stay on task. Some of the
jobs I give to students are group leader, spokesperson, timer, supplier,
scribe, etc. I really love using group work because once you can get
students talking about a topic, they are much more likely to remember
what they learned and be able to apply it. I also think this gives
students a chance to practice communicating about their ideas and
solutions.
How I will use this to further my professional goals: I will
continue to use group work in classes. I feel that students need
practice working in groups and communicating about their ideas.
Giving students jobs in their group, makes them feel accountable and
stay focused.

Standard: 7e) Provides multiple opportunities for students to develop

higher-order
and meta-cognitive skills.
Evidence: Trigonometry Proofs
Reflection: I had students complete proofs for trigonometry identities.
These proofs required a lot of problem solving and they required students
to think critically about the laws in trigonometry. Completing these
proofs showed that students could use the laws in trigonometry and
apply problem solving concepts they had previously learned. Writing a
proof shows that a student can use critical thinking to solve a problem.
Many students have a hard time writing proofs because they arent used
to using critical thinking skills. I enjoy using proofs in my classes and will
continue to do so.
How I will use this to further my professional goals:
I will continue to use proofs in my classes to give students the
opportunity of using critical thinking skills to solve problems. Students
are required to be familiar with rules and identities in math to be able to
apply them. I think that having students write proofs is a great way of
showing if they have a solid understanding of a concept.

Student proofs:

Standard: 7f) Provides opportunities for students to understand,

question, and analyze information from multiple and diverse sources and
perspectives to answer questions and solve real-world problems.
Evidence: Stock Market Activity
Reflection: Students are required to use different websites and research
stocks. The students collect information on some stocks and then are
given a fake sum of money to invest in the stock market. They can invest
in whatever stocks of their choosing, but they must keep track of their
stocks each day and then calculate how much was earned at the end of
the week. I think this is a great activity because it shows students how to
research stocks and investments and prepares them for real world
investments.
How I will use this to further my professional goals: I will continue
to use activities like this to encourage students to research sources and
find solutions. Students learn better when they can apply their learning
and know how they will be using it in the future. I will continue to provide
opportunities like this for students to apply what they learn.

Standard: 7g) Supports content and skill development by using

multiple media and
technology resources and knows how to evaluate these resources for
quality, accuracy, and effectiveness.
Evidence: Online Graphing Calculator
Reflection: I have show students how use an online graphing
calculator so that they can compare graphs and find solutions. I think
a graphing calculator is a great tool to have in class. It lets students
quickly see graphs and how they transform. Its a great way to let
students explore mathematical concepts and find rules.
How I will use this to further my professional goals:
I will continue to instruct students how to use an online graphing
calculator. I believe students learning is bettered when they have
more tools to use to discover and research. These tools give students
a way to problem solve.

Standard: 7h) Uses a variety of questioning strategies to promote

engagement and
learning.
Evidence: Dig Deeper
Reflection: In order to get students thinking, I use Dig Deeper
strategies. I give students questions that extend what they just learned
about and let them come up with their own ideas to the questions.
These questions also get students to compare their ideas to other
students. Its a great way to extend learning or to get students thinking
deeply about a specific topic.
How I will use this to further my professional goals: I will continue
to use questioning strategies such as dig deeper to get students thinking
and coming up with their own solutions. I think its important to give
students questions so that they will think about the content and so
students will be able to solve problems without being told how to.

could try using in my class. I know that by using technology in my
classes, I can increase student engagement.
I also learned new ways to increase student engagement outside of my
classroom. Social media is one tool that I can use to help excite and
encourage my students to learn.
How I will use this knowledge to further my professional goals:
I will continually seek out new technology to use in my class. I will try
to use technology when Im teaching to improve my students learning.

address the needs of my students and what I can do to be a more effective
teacher. I have learned how to make my lessons more rigorous and student
focused, how to write learning objectives, how to increase student
engagement, and many other teaching strategies. I have also learned more
about my schools culture through presentations on poverty, discrimination,
and suicide. I feel that all of these professional developments have added
to my effectiveness as a teacher and I look forward to attending more.
How I will use this knowledge to further my professional goals:
