Throughouttheyear,wehavediscussedavarietyoftopics.Onetopicthatwelearnedaboutwas
thebrain.Theessentialunitforthistopicwas,Howcanlearningaboutthebrainmakeyouabetter
student?Fromthislesson,Ilearnedthatlearningaboutthebraincanmakeyouabetterstudentbecause
youcanlearnfactsaboutthebrainthatwillinfluenceyourlife.Forexample,onebrainrulethatIlearned
was:Visiontrumpsallothersenses,meaningthatitisbettertoseesomethingthantoreadit.Ibelievethat
knowingthisfactcanmakemeabetterstudentbecauseInowknowthatitwillbewiserformetouse
diagramsandpictureswhenstudyingratherthanreadingparagraphsinatextbook.Ialsonowhavea
greaterappreciationforcells.Cellsarethebasicunitofstructureandfunctioninalllivingorganismsand
controleverythingwedo.Cellsallowustowalk,talk,jump,dance,andmuchmore.Theyconstantlykeep
usalertandallowustolive.Ialsolearnedthatplantsaremadeoutofcellstoo,howeverplantcellsare
differentfromanimalcells.Plantcellshaveacellwall,chloroplastsandavacuole,whileanimalcellsdo
not.Ilearnedthattheseorganismshavedifferentstructuresintheircellsfordifferentreasons.For
example,aplanthasacellwallsothatitcansurvivenature(wind,rain,etc),andsincehumansdonot
stayinthegroundwedonothavethisstructureinourcells.Wealsodonothaveacellwallbecauseifwe
did,wewouldnotbeabletomovefreelyandliveanormallife.Thisbiologyclasshastaughtmethat
thereisageneticreasonwhyorganismsarebuiltdifferently,whichmakesmeappreciatethestructuresin
mybodythatIdohavethatallowmetobethehealthyteenagerthatIam.
OnetopicthatIstruggledwithunderstandingwastheonethatwefocusedoninQuarter4.This
topicwasrace.Theessentialquestion,Isracereal?,askedasimplequestionthatisactuallydifficultto
answer.Priortothislesson,Iwouldhaveagreed100%thatraceisrealbecauseIhaveonlylearnedabout

racefromahistoricalperspective,notabiologicalperspective.SinceIcameintothislessonthinkingthat
racewasreal,itwashardformetowrapmyheadaroundtheideaofitnotbeingreal.Webeganour
lessontalkingaboutthedifferentspeciesoforganisms.Welearnedthattherehasbeenabout15different
speciesoforganismsallinthegenusHomoandthattheyallshareacommonancestor.Wetalkedabout
speciesinmanyotherorganismstoo,suchasChimpanzeesandBonobos.Ifounditdifficulttomake
connectionsbetweenthetwo.Itwashardformetounderstandwhatspecieshadtodowithrace,however,
asIbegantoaskquestionsandthelessonprogressedIwasfinallyabletomaketheconnection.Ilearned
thatorganismsarenotclassifiedbasedontheirrace,theyareclassifiedbasedonspecies,genus,family,
kingdom,etc.,simplybecauseracedoesnotexist.Ilearnedthatraceisjustanideaandhasnoscientific
importancewhatsoever.
Assomeonewhowantstobecomeadoctoroneday,thisclasshasimpactedmeinmanyways.
Beforetakingthiscourse,anythingthatIknewaboutbiologywasfromsixthgrade.Ihadnthadanyother
lessonsaboutbiologyforalongtime,sowhenIlearnedthatIwasgoingtohaveabiologyclassthisyear,
Iwasprettyexcited.Thisbiologyclasshasinfluencedmychoicetobeadoctorevenmore.Ithas
intriguedmeinlessonsandhasmademewanttofurthermyknowledgeaboutcertaintopics.Onetopic
thathasreallyintriguedmewasrace.Welearnedthatgeneticallyraceisnotreal,itismythological.We
alsolearnedthatallhumansare99.9%geneticallyidentical.Thisisafactthatreallyshockedmeandhas
mademewanttolearnmoreaboutthetopicofraceinhumans.Istillwonderhowwecanbethatsimilar?
Iwonderhowitisevenpossibleforhumanstobesogeneticallysimilarwhenweareallsodifferent?
FromthislessonIhavecometotheconclusionthatitissillyforpeopletojudgeoneanother.Thisis
becausewhenwearejudgingeachother,itisalmostlikewearejudgingourselvessincethereisonlya
0.01%differencebetweeneachofus.IdefinitelyfeelasthoughIhavebecomeabettersciencestudent
fromthisclass.InowhaveadeeperunderstandingforsciencethatIneverhadbefore.
