SOLO E ILLITERACY
Island Time

- Functional Literacy: Reading and Writing skills that are there but not developed at all.
- a Most illiterate countries come from Africa; Afghanistan is the only exception.
- Afganistan Illiteracy could be because of the limitation of literacy. Girls are not allowed
to go to school and most boys are not able to, only high class people usually do. This
might be because of the war and also how many people are ruled by the government.
Child labour.

- WASHINGTON ILLITERACY FOUNDATION

- As many as 23% of the adult American population (40-44 million) is functionally
illiterate (Level 1 according to the National Adult Literacy Survey), lacking basic skills
beyond a fourth-grade level. This means that nearly a quarter of all american adults
are functionally illiterate which means they can read or write but at at a very simple
level.

Illiteracy is widespread, a problem in every community, not limited to any race,

region or socioeconomic class. This means that illiteracy is not limited to poorer
people and to people from a less fortunate background. However it may be more
prominent in low socioeconomic classes it is not solely present in this class.

- ILLITERACY AND ITS IMPACT ON THE ECONOMY

-

Adult illiteracy costs society an estimated $240 billion each year in lost

industrial productivity, unrealized tax revenues, welfare, crime, poverty, and related
social ills. The fact that adults are illiterate in the US means that it costs the country
240 Billion dollars because of less jobs, less production, less tax, more crime, etc.

- ILLITERACY AND HEALTH

-

Adults with low-level reading skills frequently suffer from health problems

because the lack the ability to read medical directions, health-related literature or
prescription labels. Chronic health conditions may go improperly monitored by
patients who are functionally illiterate and the overall well-being of these individuals
may worsen overtime causing frequent doctor or emergency room visits,
hospitalization, or even death. The fact that people cannot read or write means that
they lack the proper skills to take care of themselves and adhere the doctors life.

- ILLITERACY AND THE WORKPLACE

-

According to the NALS, 40% of the labor force in the United States has limited

skills. 40% of the working class in America have limited literacy skills so they cant
work as effectively.

American businesses lose more than $60 billion in productivity each year to

employees lack of basic skills. (NALS) $60 billion dollars is lost every year because
of the lack of workers literary skills.

- ILITERACY AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM

-

The rate of illiteracy in Americas correctional systems is over 60% (National

Institutes of Health) This means that 60% of all the people in prison are illiterate.

- ILLITERACY AND AMERICAS YOUTH

-

The saddest casualty of the illiteracy in America are the children who are

affected by intergenerational illiteracy. Children affected by illiteracy passed down

from parents.

Children of disadvantaged parents begin their school life behind their peers.

Parents with minimal or no reading skills often cannot provide the kind of support their

children need to do well in school. Because the parents are illiterate they cannot help
their child within school causing a cycle of illiteracy and bad education.

Analysis has shown a direct correlation between young peoples test scores

and the grade level attained by their parents.

- Poverty and illiteracy have a profound correlation. There is a strong, noticeable

relationship between Poverty and illiteracy.

- Limited exposure to reading materials, poor health, a scarcity of food, housing

instability and unsafe environments are all additional challenges that children living in
poverty often encounter. According to the Heart of America foundation, 61 percent of
families living in poverty do not have children's books in their homes. Consequently,
children living in poverty already have a 50 percent weaker vocabulary than their
mwealthier peers at the start of school. Because poorer children do not have enough
reading materials, inadequate health, less food, insufficient shelter and unsafe
communities it limits childrens education and therefore at the start of school their
vocabulary is 50% worse than wealthier and middle class people at the beginning of
school.

- Teachers are not trained well enough to tech children in poverty. They need to be
involved 100% in the childs life to have an impact and allow them to learn better. As
a result of this, low self esteem and attitude to learning all deteriorate therefore not
allowing the child to excel. This concerns teachers and schools alike. Most teachers
that educate people in poorer and impoverished countries are insufficient to teach
these children because they have to be immersed into the childrens live 100%
because that will allow the, to learn better and impact the,

- For individuals

- Limited ability to obtain and understand essential information; Cannot understand the
world around them

- Unemployment: The unemployment rate is 24 times higher among those with little
schooling than among those with Bachelors degrees; There is a lot of unemployment
concerning illiterate people.

- Lower income;
- Lower-quality jobs;
- Reduced access to lifelong learning and professional development; Hard for people to
learn thought life and gain a professional career

- Precarious financial position;Poor, no income

- a citbyat
- Little value is given to education and reading within the family, and this often leads to
intergenerational transmission of illiteracy; In some traditions and cultures education is
not a priority, meaning that illiteracy will be passed down by generations

- Low self-esteem, which can lead to isolation; No self confidence

- Impact on health: Illiterate individuals have more workplace accidents, take longer to
recover and more often misuse medication through ignorance of health care
resources and because they have trouble reading and understanding the relevant
information (warnings, dosage, contraindications, etc.). Not able to take care of
themselves and misuse of medical advice and material.

- Since literacy is an essential tool for individuals and states to be competitive in the
new global knowledge economy, many positions remain vacant for lack of personnel
adequately trained to hold them; basically means that because there are so many
people that are illiterate that they are not filling up empty job spots. therefore making
unemployment rates drop.

- The higher the proportion of adults with low literacy proficiency is, the slower the
overall long-term GDP growth rate is; d

- The difficulty understanding societal issues lowers the level of community involvement
and civic participation. People will not understand what is going on in society as they
cannot read and lead to no link to society.

- Without the basic tools necessary for achieving their goals, individuals without an
adequate level of literacy cannot be involved fully and on a completely equal basis in
social and political discourse. Because people are illiterate they will not be able to
continue education.

- Today, nearly 17% of the worlds adult population is still not literate; two thirds of them
women, making gender equality even harder to achieve.

- The scale of illiteracy among youth also represents an enormous challenge; an

estimated 122 million youth globally are illiterate, of which young women represent
60.7%. 122 million youth worldwide are illiterate aged 15-24and 60% are woman.

- Adolescents out of school: Globally, 60 per cent of secondary-school-aged children
are enrolled in secondary school. However, there are still 71 million children of lower
secondary school age are not in school, although many of these children reside in
countries where education at this level is compulsory. Secondary school enrolment
remains low in the developing world, particularly in South Asia and sub-Saharan
Africa. In these regions, fewer than one third are enrolled. There is also a drop-off in
enrolment between lower and upper secondary education. Globally, the lower
secondary gross enrolment rate was 80 per cent in 2009, whereas the upper
secondary gross enrolment rate was 56 per cent. 60% of all the secondary school
eligible children are actually enrolled, which leaves 71 million uneducated. Even
though most of these children are in places where education at a primary school level
is compulsory, secondary school enrollment is a low priority in developing world;
particularly n South Asia, and Sub-Saharan areas. In these regions, fewer than 1/3rd
of the youth are entered in secondary school. Usually students quit school after lower
secondary school. In 2009 the lower secondary enrollment rate was 80% whereas the
high school rate was 56%.

- Illiteracy: Most of the worlds 127 million illiterate youth aged 15 to 24 live in South
Asia (65 million) and sub-Saharan Africa (47 million). In the least developed countries,
one quarter of young men and one third of young women are illiterate. The most
illiterate youth live in south asia where there are 65 million children

- Unemployment: Particularly since 2007, the rate of youth unemployment has risen,
with around 75 million youth aged 15 to 24 now unemployed 12.6 per cent of the
labour force in this age group.

- Hazardous labour: The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimated that in

2008 nearly 60 per cent of 215 million children engaged in child labour were aged 12
to 17. Boys are typically engaged in hazardous labour, such as in agriculture or
industry, with higher rates of injury in such work than older workers. Girls are typically
involved in domestic work, with potential risks of abuse, mistreatment and limited
education opportunities.

TEMPLATE LETTER TO CHARATIES:

Dear Room To Read HK,

I am a Year 8 ( grade 7) student in Island School in Hong Kong and I am currently doing
a solo project on Illiteracy. Island School is one of the leading international schools in
Hong Kong and has a student population of approximately 1200 students. After
extensive research, I believe your charity is one of the most prominent and prestigious
organisations operating in this field. I would like the opportunity to interview somebody
(perhaps over skype) from your organisation regarding my project. If you would like, I
will gladly give you my questions prior to the interview.
I would really like to give my best to this project as I am extremely passionate about this
topic and raise awareness in my community to try and help alleviate illiteracy.

ANDREW KAY: CEO OF WORLD LIT FOUNDATION

World Literacy foundation are an organization that promotes literacy in the world. They
organize International literacy day on september 8th and persuade thousands of
schools worldwide to host different activities to raise awareness about this issue.
They have also recently been part of meeting between many ngos and organizations
and countries in Korea working on framework for better literacy and edition for kids
worldwide.
OXFORD, United Kingdom, March 12, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- The World Literacy Foundation announced today
that a Global Literacy Summit will be a key platform to build collective global action to eradicate illiteracy in our
society.

The event will host more than 300 delegates from more than 80 countries in the developed and developing world.
They include world leaders from governments, 60 Ambassadors, leaders of literacy, education and development
organisations, and business leaders who support the cause of literacy.

Andrew Kay, CEO of the World Literacy Foundation said, "Illiteracy has major social and economic consequences on
a person's life. Whether you live in England, United States, India or Kenya, illiteracy is ruining lives and is linked with
an array of poor life outcomes.

"The inability to read and write can be directly linked to poverty, unemployment, social exclusion, crime and long term
illness. It is estimated that 796 million people in the world are technically illiterate, and many more struggle to read
and write to a satisfactory level," he said.

Mr Kay concluded, "Illiteracy needs to be treated as if it is a disease which we are aiming to eradicate. We need to
understand that early intervention can avert a life time of hardship, poverty and pain for a child, young person or adult
who is struggling to read or write."

According to the research of World Literacy Foundation:

796 million people, or one in five adults, lack basic literacy skills
141 million primary and secondary school age children are not in school

World Literacy foundation are also partners with

http://www.aaghazfoundation.com/aaghaz_partner.html

1 in 5 people are the world are illiterate, 2/3 being women

Although 98% of illiterate people are concentrated in three key areas: South and West
Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Arab States, developed nations are also facing a
growing illiteracy problem.
In the U.S. over 93 million people have basic or below basic literacy skills.
Africa, as a whole continent, has less than a 60% literacy rate.

The real problems associated with being illiterate involve critical parts of life such as
understanding medical instruction, applying for a loan, signing a contract, or getting
basic job training. These life-altering situations are often the path to a better life, yet
without the ability to read often comes misunderstanding and confusion which
perpetuates the cycle of poverty and illness. In fact, poverty and burden of disease
correlate directly with illiteracy and low literacy. Life expectancy is lowest where people
cannot read.
