APU

A separate load compressor makes the APU capable of delivering a pneumatic supply through a
load control valve, the load compressor can be driven by a fixed shaft or free turbine. See figure
18-1.
A generator fitted to an accessory gearbox allows the APU to supply electrical power to the
aircraft;
A surge control valve unloads the compressor during APU start. A thermocouple in the exhaust
duct reduces fuel flow if the APU starts to over temperature. It may also be used for cockpit
indication. (EGT).
Some older APUs will not have an electronic control box.
During start the surge control valve will open to allow maximum airflow through the engine and
allow the starter motor to rotate the engine without driving against compression build up
(prevents compressor surge or stall). Inlet guide vanes direct the airflow at optimum angle to the
compressor.
