Past and current video installation practice

From your research into video installation, give two examples that you think influence your work / ideas
in some way.
One should be a past practitioner, the other should be contemporary.
Past Practitioner
Name:
Biography

David Hall
David started learning his work at leicester college of art
learning the basics of his work, david work as a sculptor and
then became to show his work all around the world. He won
an award at biennale de paris in 1965, and also took part in a
number of other shows and competitions.

Contemporary Practitioner
Name:

Bill Viola

Biography

Born: March 2nd 1951

Bill is internationally recognized as one of todays
leading artists. He has been instrumental in the
establishment of video as a vital form of contemporary
art.

Images

Notes on their installation

Bill uses a lot of live actors in his installation to present his
work, bill mainly focused his work on image and sound and
finds different ways of using them to create different
atmospheres and feelings.
How is it similar to your ideas?

However I like the way bill presents his work as it

uses live actors and performances to entice the
audience. Bill used empty spaces to create an
scary and uncertain effect in his work, for
example in the picture below there is only an
altar and an actor nothing else. It also allows the
actors to move about without falling over
something.

EXT THAMES RIVER MORNING

DAY 1
Josh Wood
The Olympic class boat will be filmed coming through the bridge with Josh Wood
driving it ( We will focus on Mid shots and Close ups in this session)
Heart beat sounds will be playing getting faster and faster in editing. The
music will then also slowly get louder and louder.
EXT HOBBS OF HENLEY (ONBOARD BOAT) MORNING
Josh Wood
The crew and then going to capture some shots from inside the boat of the
driver and the sides of the boat.
The footage would be cutting to the beat of the music.
EXT HENLEY BRIDGE MIDDAY
Josh Wood
The crew are then gonna capture shots from ashore from far away and gathering
panning shots etc.
The ending title will be edited and inserted, then the footage will slowly fade
out with the music.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Sound design
What sound will your FMP / Productions have?
I will have Head Phones linked to the computer, so when the people view the videos on weebly they
can hear it clearly, the sound files are MP3/Wav so they are clear

Will you use headphones or speakers for this sound?

I will use Headphones

Why?
if I had speakers it could disturbt other peoples exhibitions and block out there video sounds

Lighting design
What lighting will you have in your installation? Consider health and safety.
I am only using the natural lighting from the building as if I was to use studio lighting it runs the risk of a
trip hazard, and as the light would need to be on for 8 Hours a day it could get hot and may burn
somone.

Sketch out your lighting plans for the installation.

up plan encase the internet dosent work and I will bring my hard drive with all the clips on it.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Technological convergence
What is technological convergence?

Technological convergence is a piece technology that changes, different technological systems

sometimes evolve toward performing similar tasks.

Will you be using this in your installation?

I would be using this as instead of usinhg an old projector I am going to use a laptop

Explain your answer.

The reason for this is because I am able to show a lot more on an laptop than I could on an old
projector. The means of the advance in technogly also means that the laptop that I will be presenting
my work onto is a lot better quality in both sound and graphics.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

How have the following influenced your ideas?

work of the artists you have researched

Looking into how different artists

have presented there work has
given me a great range of how I
can present mine, for example I
can use live actors etc. I have
decided to go with a more mordern
artist and use the lastest
technology to present my work.

venue and facilites

As our chosen location is the red

lion hotel it is quite limited on
sapce and equitment, this means
that I may have to share my
installtion work with an partner,
however we are going to present
our work on a loop together and
will be shown on an laptop.

lighting

The lighting in the red lion regatta

room is perfect as there arnt many
windows and they can be blanked out,
this means that the sunlight wont blind
the computer screens and projectors
etc.

sound

The room is bound to be noisy if it is

busy, so I thought I will present my
work using headphones, as the
audience can only hear the work not
other people.

screens / projectors

speakers / headphones

I will be sharing an laptop with

another student, both of our work
will be displayed on an loop, we
dont have any projectors avilable.
I will have headphones for the
audience to view our work, they
provide great quality and allow the
viewer to adjust the sound as they
wish.

Copyright issues
What potential copyright issues could your FMP infringe?
I could have encountered a number of issues, for example the music I used wasnt created by me so I
had to ask the producer for his permission to use it, I filmed in a private area called Hobbs Of Henley
this ment that I had to grab permission from the owner to film on his land.

How can you be certain that your work does not violate any copyright infringements?
I asked the owner of hobbs of henley to film of his land, also they owner of the music I used I emailed
him and asked for his permission to use it, in which he agreed.
