Mindmap of ideas for your installation

Create a mindmap showing ideas of how you might install your video.
Define what type(s) of visuals you will use.
(Eg. video cameras, still cameras, hand crafted artwork, film, animation, digital technologies)

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Past and current video installation practice

From your research into video installation, give two examples that you think influence your work / ideas
in some way.
One should be a past practitioner, the other should be contemporary.
Past Practitioner
Name

David Hall

Biography

Worked as a sculptor during the 1960s. Began working with

film and videos as art in the early 1970s. Co-organiser of The
Video Show in 1975, the first major national show of artists
video installations. Co-founder of London Video Arts. Died in
2014.

Images

Notes on their installation

First pioneer of video installation art in the UK. Created a

piece of 1001 TV Sets. TV Interruptions was acquired by the
Tate in 2014 and exhibited during the month of his death.

How is it similar to your ideas?

Various different screens. Uses actual screens instead of

projections.

Contemporary Practitioner
Name:

Gillian Wearing

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Biography

Born in 1963. Winner of the Turner Prize in 1997. Has made

various pieces of film-footage art and also other video art.
Exhibited using a mixture of sculpture, video and
photography.

Images

Notes on their installation

Tends to use black and white video installations in dark

rooms. Often has a political message either in the film
content or in the installation set-up. Uses large screens to
display her work.

How is it similar to your ideas?

Not very similar as she focuses more on the content of the

videos rather than the arrangement. Obviously I will be using
suitable content in my installation but Im trying to focus on
how all the screens and props will interact at the minute.

Installation / set sketches

Draw a series of thumbnail sketches showing ideas for your installation. Add labels to your diagrams to
identify equipment, where the image will be seen, where the audience will stand etc.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Sound design
What sound will your FMP / Productions have?
My FMP wont have any sound as it is a magazine, however other aspects of my installation will include
sound. Additionally, when it comes to the other pieces that I am exhibiting (music video, animation, live
show and my radio show), there will be music from the music videon animation and live show; then
speech from the live show and radio drama.

Will you use headphones or speakers for this sound?

I will use separate sets of headphones for each piece of audio in my installation. Additionally, as I dont
have enough headphones there will be labels on my installation piece saying that the two pairs of
headphones that I have are there to be shared for each exhibition piece on my table.

Why?
So that it is easier for people to concentrate solely on that piece of work instead of being distracted by
all the other things happening in the installation space. Additionally it means that my installation wont
be intrusive to other peoples areas of work.

Lighting design
What lighting will you have in your installation? Consider health and safety.
I will mainly be using the light within the main installation space (i.e. hall), so that I have more time to
concentrate on the design of my exhibition and its content rather than setting up needless additional
lighting arrangements. In terms of health and safety I will only be using the lighting supplied in the Red
Lion Regatta Room, rather than any additional lighting for my exhibition table so there will be no
problems.

Projection vs screen
Will you project your video or play it on a screen?
Originally I was going to project my final studio production onto a cardboard box to fit with the recycling
theme of my installation, however due to a lack of resources I will only be using computer screens to
show my work.

Why?

If you are projecting what will

you project ONTO? (ie fabric,
screen, materials etc)

How will that change how your

audience READS your FMP?
Hopefully having a physical copy of
my final major project will enable
people to feel more connected to
the magazine and will also let them
look over it in a lot of detail.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Technological convergence
What is technological convergence?
Technological convergence is when separate pieces of technology come together to present or produce
something with one another. For example, when installation artist Alan Kaprow produced his
Environmental pieces, he used video, painting and other artistic mediums to produce an overall
interactive experience.

Will you be using this in your installation? Explain your answer.

Overall I will not be using a large amount of technological convergence as I will only be using two
screens (one of them split), and an iPod to exhibit my work. However the main convergence will be
between the sound part of my installation and the visual parts.

Location recce
Complete the location recce for the final venue.
The front of the Red Lion is easily accessible and is also
prominent and quickly recognisable.

The room we will be using is quite large and

easy to find within the hotel as it is clearly
signposted

It is in a scenic location and also close to a lot of

other restaurants and pubs so in this way it is
appealing to potential visitors and viewers.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

How have the following influenced your ideas?

work of the artists you have researched

David Hall uses a large amount of

screens which I think would be easier
and more effective than projections.
Theyd also be easier to control.

venue and facilites

The venue is smaller than I originally

planned for so Im going to be
compacting my final design.

lighting

Screens will also be better in terms of

lighting as a projection might be faded
with artificial light from the installation
area.

sound

screens / projectors

I will be using one projected screen for

the TV show installation piece but then
the rest of it will be shown using
screens around the cardboard boxes.

speakers / headphones

I will only be using headphones so

people will be able to pay more
attention to my work and also so that
other peoples installations arent
interrupted.

I will be using no outside sound in

my installation as that will disrupt
other peoples installations so I will
be using earphones so people can
hear my different pieces of work.

Cast and Crew and Production roles

Research into each role. Define what they do, what skills they need to accomplish their task and who
will be completing the taks in your animation.
Director
Describe their job.
The director is responsible for organising everything that happens on the set and the studio floor

What skills do they need to do their job well?

They need to be well organised and also level headed and a good leader
Who will be completing this task in your FMP?
I will be directing everything related to my FMP as I am the only one responsible for it
Producer
Describe their job.
The producers job oversee video production however some of them take a more executive role
in production and are responsible for pitching new products to other production companies
What skills do they need to do their job well?
They need to be well organised and also confident in their work and ideas
Who will be completing this task in your animation?
I will be producing everything for my FMP
Storyboard artist
Describe their job.
A storyboard artist is responsible for designing each part of the storyboard for a production or
magazine
What skills do they need to do their job well?
They need to be creative and good at drawing in order to complete their job
Who will be completing this task in your animation?
I will be designing everything in my magazine

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Production schedule
Complete the production schedule for your FMP. Complete one for each day of filming.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Copyright issues
What potential copyright issues could your FMP infringe?
There could potentially be issues with the films and books that I used to review, however all comments
on them were positive so I dont think their creators would be upset. Additionally there could be a
problem with the advertisements that I made as I didnt ask for permission before creating them,
however again, because the adverts will also be reaching everyone who goes to the exhibition so the
products will be being advertised there.

How can you be certain that your work does not violate any copyright infringements?
It coule potentially violate copyright infringements however as I have used the products etc for
educational pruposes, I think that legal-wise, everything should be fine.
