Homework Assignment #4
1. (3.4 A.1, revisit) There are three factories on the Momiss River (1, 2, and 3). Each emits two types of
pollutants (1 and 2) into the river. If the waste from each factory is processed, the pollution in the river can
be reduced. It costs $15 to process a ton of factory 1 waste, and each ton processed reduces the amount of
pollutant 1 by 0.10 ton and the amount of pollutant 2 by 0.45 ton. It costs $10 to process a ton of factory 2
waste, and each ton processed will reduce the amount of pollutant 1 by 0.20 ton and the amount of pollutant
2 by 0.25 ton. It costs $20 to process a ton of factory 3 waste, and each ton processed will reduce the amount
of pollutant 1 by 0.40 ton and the amount of pollutant 2 by 0.30 ton. The state wants to reduce the amount
of pollutant 1 in the river by at least 30 tons and the amount of pollutant 2 in the river by at least 40 tons.
Formulate an LP that will minimize the cost of reducing pollution by the desired amounts. Find the optimal
solution, if any.
2. (3.5 A.2, revisit) During each 4-hour period, the Smalltown police force requires the following number of
on-duty police officers: 12 midnight to 4 A.M.8; 4 to 8 A.M.7; 8 A.M. to 12 noon 6; 12 noon to 4 P.M.6;
4 to 8 P.M.5; 8 P.M. to 12 midnight4. Each police officer works two consecutive 4-hour shifts. Formulate an
LP that can be used to minimize the number of police officers needed to meet Smalltowns daily requirements.
Find the optimal solution, if any.
3. The Dakota Furniture Company manufactures desks, tables and chairs. The manufacture of each type of
furniture requires lumber and two types of skilled labor: finishing and carpentry. The amount of each resource
needed to make each type of furniture is given in the following table. Currently, 48 board feet of lumber, 20

finishing hours, and 8 carpentry hours are available. A desk sells for $60, a table for $30, and a chair for $15.
Dakota believe that demand for desks and chairs is unlimited, but at most five tables can be sold. Because
the available resources have already been purchased, Dakota wants to maximize total revenue. Formulate an
LP and find the optimal solution using the Simplex algorithm manually.
