Characters, setting, problem, climax,
solution, and conclusion). Activate
prior knowledge by doing a think-pairshare activity on problem and
solution. Pair students and ask them
to explain a time when there was a
problem and they came up with a
solution. Then have groups share
aloud their examples. Next, as a class
using a thinking map, have students
predict what problem Swimmy might

RATIONALE

activate their
prior
knowledge
about problem
and solution in
partners to
help them
make
predictions
about the

Strategies:
Think-Pair-Share about the concept
of problem and solution.
Thinking Map about what problems
Swimmy could face in the ocean.
THROUGH
Put students back in groups of two
and assign a concept to each group
(i.e. problem, solution, and
characters/main character). Have
students follow along while teacher
reads the story and have each group
find the example for their word in the
text. For example, for problem the
students should find that all the little
fish had to hide from the big fish.
Then, after the story is over have the
pair discuss their findings and then
have each pair share with the class
what they found.
Strategies:
Jigsaw to find problem, solution and
characters to share with the whole
class.
