Video Installations

Fiona Tan

Fiona Tan primarily works in film and photography. Her art often explores
themes of history, identity and memory. Fiona Tan was born in Pekanburu,
Indonesia in 1966. She is most known for her photography, film and video
installations, though she was raised in Australia she currently lives in
Amsterdam. An example of her work is when she has two dierent videos
playing at the same time which makes you continuously watching them to
figure out what links them together. Her style of videos are hard to figure
out but interesting so you keep watching to figure them out and the
meaning behind them. As you can see in the picture above Fiona used
three screens each displaying something dierent so you have interpret
your own idea of what is going on. You would have to watch one screen at
a time in any order to figure out your own idea of what message you think
Fiona is trying to get across.

Bill Viola
Bill Viola (born 1951) is a contemporary video artist. He is considered a leading
figure in the generation of artists whose artistic expression depends upon
electronic, sound, and image technology in New Media. His works focus on the
ideas behind fundamental human experiences such as birth, death and aspects
of consciousness. Examples would be birth, death and the aspects of the

human consciousness. His installations are based on the human

consciousness and life and death, his installation videos are dierent to
any other Ive looked at but they make you want to watch more, one of his
pieces Acceptance starts with a figure out of focus and as the video
develops it becomes a women who looks as if she is standing under a
waterfall. When watching it you can see that his installations are simplistic
however its easy to figure out what his ones are about even though they
dont really follow a narrative. Bills installations are follow death scenes
so they would be aimed at a more mature age group rather than younger.

Spartacus Chetwynd is installation artist and is well known for her pieces which
are celebrations of cultural history whilst amplifying insanity to images of cultural
history and because of this her work becomes well know and stands out as not
being boring and because its based on cultural history it almost becomes a
history lesson, a form of education where you learn about history. One thing that
makes her work famous is the thought and preparation she uses in all her
installations using at screens, headphones, funky costumes, unique set designs
and bean bags so when she creates an installation she makes it look like no
others giving o a completely dierent look which attracts people.

All three of these installation artist having given me inspiration but my

installation is completely dierent on how it will look compared to these artist.
My installation will be showing adverts on loop on one screen where as these
artist try and tells stories on multiple screens or on abstract set designs.
Although I enjoyed these artist installation work mine will be dierent to theirs in
my own way.
