LITR 630
2 July 2015
Podcast Lesson Plan
Grade Level: 3rd
Time needed to complete: 45 minutes
Standards:
KCAS
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.3.6
Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate conversational, general academic, and domainspecific words and phrases, including those that signal spatial and temporal relationships (e.g.,
After dinner that night we went looking for them)
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.10
Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and
shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks,
purposes, and audiences.
CCSS.Math.Content.3.G.A.1
Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share
attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category
(e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of
quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these
subcategories.

Learning Target
Today I am using a podcast to develop my vocabulary about polygons so I can describe the
attributes of different quadrilaterals. Ill know I have it when I can find a real world example of
a quadrilateral and describe its attributes.
Materials

Class set of computers

Class set of headphones

Podcast on Wiki
Google Docs- Example of Quadrilaterals (posted on Wiki)
Access to images through the internet or clipart
Polygon song
o https://youtu.be/69lfTURDles

Procedure
Warm-up (5 minutes)

Activate prior knowledge by playing Polygon Song

o Pause song for each shape
o Have students draw shapes in air when directed
Explain the students will be listening to a Podcast that will help them determine the
names and attributes of different quadrilaterals.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

Listen to Podcast about quadrilaterals at least once

o Vocabulary: polygon, quadrilateral, parallelogram, trapezoid, rectangle, rhombus,
square, parallel sides, congruent sides, right angle
Follow the directions of whispering the missing word or draw a shape in the air
Repeat if needed to comprehend vocabulary
Teacher will watch and listen to student responses. May prompt students to listen to it
again based on performance.

Collaboration (20 minutes)

Complete Google Docs task- Examples of Quadrilaterals

Students may re-listen to Podcast if needed.
o Directions

Find an image on the internet or clipart that shows a real world example of a
quadrilateral.
Place it in the box with your number.
Look at a classmates image.
Comment on whether it is or isnt a quadrilateral. Support your answer with
math vocabulary that you heard in the Podcast. ***Type your initials next to
your comment

Closing (10 minutes)

Review polygon definition and examples

Invite volunteers to share real world examples of quadrilaterals
Ask for a weather report of the students. What did they accomplish, do they have any
questions/ struggles, how would they describe their inner weather (sunny, cloudy, rainy,
stormy)

Assessment
Students will be assessed on their image selection and their response to a classmates image. For
mastery, the student needs to choose a real world example of a quadrilateral and use accurate
math vocabulary to support their response.
Accommodations/ Modifications
Provide a chart of shapes with name labels to help students associate the math vocabulary
with pictures. These shapes can be traced during the air drawings.
Allow students to watch a video with the quadrilateral shapes either before or after
listening to Podcast to provide both audio and visual
All students to think-pair-share their images/responses with a partner so that ideas and
confidence can be developed prior to completing Google Docs
