This document provides details for an assignment on modeling moment-curvature relationships for concrete cross-sections using Excel spreadsheets. Students are asked to: (1) develop moment-curvature relationships for a cross-section of their choice and identify yield and maximum moment values for different reinforcement ratios, and (2) verify their Excel model by comparing results to an independent source. Higher scores will be given to students who can model non-rectangular sections or verify their program against software like Response 2000. Plagiarism on cross-section details is prohibited.

Concrete Design and Technology CVEN90016 (Semester 2 2014)
Assignment (Deformation Modelling)
(Due date Wednesday 22nd of October) In this subject, you are trained to use EXCEL spreadsheets for undertaking analysis of the moment curvature relationship for rectangular crosssections. In this assignment you are required to further develop and make use of the spreadsheets for undertaking the following tasks : (i)
Develop the moment-curvature relationships of a concrete crosssection and reinforcement details of your choice based on the model for unconfined concrete and N/Ag.f c ratios of 0.02, 0.12 and 0.2. Show the details clearly using sketches.
(ii)
From your developed spreadsheets identify the secant flexural
rigidity (EICR) of the concrete cross-section at yield and the maximum moment of resistance of the concrete cross-section for different N/Ag.fc ratios; and compare the calculated moment of resistance with those obtained from an independent source (which could be a column interaction diagram provided by a design handbook, a text book, provisions in a standard/code of practice or by your own hand calculations). Identify what independent source has been used for undertaking this check.
Merits (meaning higher scores) will be given to students who have
demonstrated their ability to further develop the EXCEL spreadsheets for simulating moment-curvature relationships of non-rectangular cross-sections and have their own program verified based on benchmarking against other programs (such as program RESPONSE 2000). You must not present a concrete cross-section and reinforcement details which is similar to what has been presented in class or by another member of the class. Plagiarism will be dealt with severely.
