Cooling Calculation
“Tefind the cooling capacity needed to air-condition a space. The most simple formula i a follows
Hoat load in watts = $x (Te-T)) x K
Were:
8 Square area in m2
Te = External Temperature
Ti= Internal Temperature
K= Thermal coefficient of the room to be conditioned
(Te- T))= typicaly forthe Mediterranean uses 8-10 which is the difference you want to achieve between outside and inside temperature. For
tropical climates the standard value is 15,
The K value is determined by the solar gain, the quantty of people and the use ofthe room. Typically these values are as fllows-
+ Owners cabin and guest cabins: K= 20-22
+ Saloon or dinette wth ited window and glass area (sang yacht or power"
+ Saloon or dinette wih large glass area (power boat -fy-oridge configuration):
+ Whelnouse (paver boat) with very large glass area: K=40
‘As an example, lo air-condition a dinetlo in a “open” power boat: is area is (3m x2m)
+ W= 6m2 x30 (kK) x10 (Te -T)=1,8000
This number represents the amount of heat to be extracted by the air-conditioner in order to keep the inside temperature 10 °C below the
outside tomperature expressed in watts,
[As most of the marine ai-conditioning industry sll works In imperial units the BTUHr equivalent is ealculated as folows:
+ 1800Wx3,410 = 6,120 BTUH
