Social Skill Interventions for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Jed Baker: http://www.jedbaker.com

I would highly recommend the Jed Baker books that I referenced in my presentation. The Social
Skills Picture Book reviews a lot of scenarios that you can role play with a child. The Social
Skills Training book has a lot of worksheet activities about regulating behaviours, participating in
conversations, making friends, behavior management, etc.
National Autism Resources: http://www.nationalautismresources.com
This was my primary resource for collecting games that promote social skills since I could only
find a limited variety at educational stores in Calgary. Warning, they charged me duty on the
resources that I ordered since they ship from the U.S. So you may want to look and see if any of
these resources are available in Canada first.
Key Education Publishing Resources: http://www.carsondellosa.com/cd2/default.aspx?

I found some great resources from this publishing company in the Scholars Choice store in NW
Calgary (Silver Springs). You can also order online: http://toys.scholarschoice.ca
The Key Education Resources I have used that I found helpful are:

Remember Your Manners this book has reproducible social skill stories that you can
read. There are aligned activities to the social skill that is learned in the story. There are
also role playing activities and questions that test the childs understanding of the story

Faces and Feelings Listening Lotto This one is good for children with ASD who have
trouble recognizing faces with emotions. They are given pictures of different facial
expressions and have to guess which face matches the dialogue that is being spoken on an
accompanying CD. http://toys.scholarschoice.ca/catalog/product/view/id/93522/s/facesand-feelings-listening-lotto/
Photo Conversation Cards These cards have different pictures of different real-life
situations and emotions. The child can read the card and answer questions that are
printed on the back. You can also engage in conversations with them about the different
topics that are presented.

Educating the Young Child with Autism Spectrum Disorders this is a great resource
for teachers to use with an integrated setting in their classroom for students with ASD.
There are strategies that give help for dealing with problem behaviours, how to faciliate
socialization with others in the class, help on developing an individualized support plan
(ISP or IPP), etc. This book is more suitable for students in K-gr. 3.

Teaching Tips for Challenging Behaviours this book is beneficial for teaching not
just students with ASD, but those with other behavioral issues as well. This focuses on
those who have trouble retaining information, poor language development, poor attention
span, reading difficulties, etc.

UCLA Childrens Friendship Program:

This is a 12 week intervention program for younger children to help them build basic social skills
and develop friendships. I found this website had some useful information on it. Their
adolescent program is called:
