Evaluation:

Throughout the process of composing my SGP, I was posed with several limitations and problems,
mainly regarding my ability to gather a balance of secondary and primary data for each aim. My
failure to gather enough primary data for my first and third aim meant that I was heavily reliant on
secondary data. Even though I believe I gathered a good amount of primary data in Parramatta for
aim 2, i had issues with interviewing large and important organisations such as Settlement Services
International and the Salvation Army. In saying this, I believe that I succeeded in gathering that
much primary data in Parramatta considering my lack of data gathered in Haymarket. I also believe
I succeeded in gathering accurate and necessary data for Aim one. Whilst looking through all
government departments to search for their policies, took longer than I thought. It was necessary
and something that I did achieve in the end. I also had problems gathering all my information and
statistics/images in the end to compose an overall report as my lack of documentation of research
that occurred during the terms was not organised and in turn another challenge for me to ensure that
it was all there in the final copy. I also had issues gathering data overall for Haymarket, this limited
me in my ability to analyse the area and in turn my conclusions. The issues I had gaining primary
data for Haymarket, negatively influenced my ability to plan and write my essay and then in turn
caused some more problems regarding having a balance of information and analysis under each
aim.
I believe that I have benefited from this task as it challenged me to synthesise my research within a
word limit and it has caused me to see the importance of gathering primary data and has also taught
me the ways to do so. I also believe that this project has taught me invaluable lessons in time
management and organisation. It has taught me that keeping on task and not putting it off in the
future is something that I will endeavour to do. Another key idea that my SGP has taught me is the
importance of referencing my work and being conscious of what I have researched and really
making sure I combine everything together to give an accurate representation of what I have
understood.
I would make three main improvements to my SGP, being that I would change my two focus areas
to areas that have perhaps have migrants who are on the similar amounts of the same visas (i.e.
students or all skilled visas) rather than the stark contrast between skilled visas/family visas in
Parramatta to the mainly student visa/business visa in Haymarket. I believe this discrepancy could
of effected my conclusions and would of made it more accurate to not of occurred. I would of also
improved the layout of my website to ensure that all images and statistics could be easily found and
all information more clearly set out. Lastly, I believe in order to make my report more accurate, I
should of had a set of guidelines clarifying what made government services successful in each area,
whether it was the fact they were present or not or rather if they were being utilised and there was
evidence of this.
