LANGUAGE STANDARDS AND CONTENT OBJECTIVES

COMMON CORE CONTENT STANDARD

Collaborative

K.MD: Describe and compare measurable

attributes
1. Describe measurable attributes of objects, such
as length or weight. Describe several measurable
attributes of a single subject.
1: Physical Sciences: Properties of materials
can be observed, measured, and predicted.
as a basis for understanding this concept:
1a. Students know objects can be described in
terms of the materials they are made of (eg. clay,
cloth, paper, etc.) and their physical properties
(eg. color, size, shape, weight, texture, flexibility,
attraction to magnets, floating, sinking).

1. Exchanging information and ideas

Contribute to class, group, and partner
discussions by listening attentively,
following turntaking rules, and asking and
answering questions.

Interpretive

Productive

5. Listening actively
Demonstrate active listening to readalouds and
oral presentations by asking and answering
detailed questions with minimal prompting and
light support.

10. Writing
Draw, dictate, and write to compose longer
literary texts (e.g., story) and informational
texts (e.g., an information report on dogs),
collaboratively with an adult (e.g., joint
construction of texts), with peers, and
independently using appropriate text
organization.

INTO, THROUGH, and BEYOND

INTO
Teacher will explain that students will be using their
senses to explore the outside and inside of a
pumpkin. Teacher will tap into the students prior
knowledge by asking what they know about
pumpkins, how they look, how they feel, etc.
Teacher will then explain that pumpkins come in
different shapes, sizes and colors. The teacher will
pass a pumpkin around the circle, inviting students
to share out loud what they are observing. They will
do this with different types of pumpkins with
different attributes (shape, size, color, etc).
Once students have been given the opportunity to

see the different pumpkins, the teacher will invite

students to describe the OUTSIDE of the pumpkins,
encouraging them to describe how they look and
feel. Teacher will record their observation in the
Outside section of the chart.
Next, students will THINK, PAIR, SHARE with their
elbow partner and predict how the inside of the
pumpkin will look and feel. Teacher will pass around
an open pumpkin and allow them to
observe/smell/feel the INSIDE of the pumpkin.
Teacher will record their observations on the Inside
section of the chart. Teacher will then review the
chart.
Strategies:
1. Frontloading
2. Realia
3. THINK, Pair, Share

THROUGH

RATIONALE

The teacher will do a picture walk

of the story before reading out
loud, encouraging students to
predict what is happening on each
page. Students will predict what
will occur in the story by looking
at the pictures and sharing them
with the class.

REFLECTION
(To be completed after lesson
is presented and taught. Refer
to reflective questions)

Students will be paired up and be given a pumpkin

and an investigation activity. Teacher will scaffold
the activity by modeling the different sections of the
pumpkin on the SmartBoard, calling on students to
come up and help.
Strategies:
1. Picture Walk
2. Modeling

BEYOND
Students will work with their partner and fill out
their pumpkin activity sheet. Teacher will review
each section to remind students of what they are
supposed to do.
When students are done, they will use their pumpkin
activity sheet to write about their pumpkins.
Students who need support with writing, will have
sentence frames to help them write about their
pumpkin.
