V. OBJECTIVE(S):
By the end of_
40 minutes,
the students will: be able to explain qualities of a good friend.
Students will be able to provide three examples of ways they can be a good friend.
Students will be able to recall details from the story referring to the characters setting

and major events. Students will make a friendship snack as a group and then sign a pledge
to be kind to one another.
VI. PROCEDURES
Introduction:
Students will be called to the carpet by table groups. Students will be
asked to sit criss cross with their bottom on the floor.
Transition/Focus Attention:
Teacher will clap a pattern and then fold her hands in her lap. Students will repeat the
pattern and fold their hands in their lap.
Motivation/Hook:
Teacher will bring up the chart with the title What makes a good friend?.
She will ask
for volunteers to provide answers to the question. Teacher will write up the students
responses. (maximum 7 answers). Then the teacher will ask the other question What
makes a bad friend? Teacher will call on students and write up their responses.
Teacher will say I want you to pay close attention to this story as I read.

Set Behavior Expectations:


Teachers will remind the students to sit on their bottom for the entire story and to raise
their hand if questions are asked. Teacher will remind the students to not talk during the
story so they dont miss any important parts!
Set Purpose:
Teacher will briefly explain to the students the benefits of being a good friend and
getting along with everyone.

Steps/Learning Activities/Differentiated Instruction:
Teacher will provide a variety of visuals for the students. When presenting the words
friend and enemy, the teacher will have the definitions with examples for the students.
A chart will be used to document student participation. Students will visual or hearing
impairments will be placed close to the teacher and the board at the carpet. During the
craft activity the teacher will be walking around to provide assistance and discussing
their craft with the students.
Anticipated Time for Each Step:

1. Students will be called to the carpet by table groups. Students will be asked to sit
criss cross with their bottom on the floor. (4 min)
2. Teacher will clap a pattern and then fold her hands in her lap. Students will repeat
the pattern and fold their hands in their lap. (1 min)

3. Teachers will remind the students to sit on their bottom while at the carpet and to
raise their hand if they would like to provide an answer. Teacher will remind the
students that everyone may not get a turn during this activity, but they will be
more chances later in the lesson. (1 min)

4. Teacher will bring up the chart with the title What makes a good friend?.
She
will ask for volunteers to provide answers to the question. Teacher will write up the
students responses. (maximum 7 answers). Then the teacher will ask the other
question What makes a bad friend? Teacher will call on students and write up
their responses.
Teacher will say I want you to pay close attention to this story as I read. (5)
5. Teachers will remind the students again to sit on their bottom for the entire story
and to raise their hand if questions are asked. Teacher will remind the students to
not talk during the story so they dont miss any important parts! (1 min)
6. Teacher will briefly explain to the students the benefits of being a good friend
and getting along with everyone. Then as a class they will take a picture walk
through the story and make some predictions. ( 2)
7. Teacher will read the story
Enemy pie
By: Derek Munson's. The teacher will stop
throughout the story and ask the students to explain what is happening in the
story, who the characters are, what has happened so far ect. ( 7 min)
8. After the story the teacher will ask the student to recall what happened in the
story. What stood out to them. If answers match the teacher will write the
students responses on the initial chart used in the beginning of the lesson. (5)
9. Teacher will introduce the friendship snack. Teacher will tell the students they will
be making a friendship snack and everyone will get to add in a cup full of items to
make the special snack. (1 min)
10. Teacher will dismiss the students back to their seats by a color they are wearing.
Teacher will remind the students to stay in their seats with their whisper voices
on. (2 in)

11. Teacher will pass out a cup full of snack items to each child. Then the teacher will
walk around and have each student pour their cup in and give it a stir. Before
eating the snack the teacher will have the class join in on a pledge chant about
being a good friend. While each student is eating their snack, the teacher will call
up one student at a time to sign the pledge and describe how they can be a good
friend. (12 min)

Closure:
The teacher will wrap up the activity with a short project of the students making a
friendship craft for a friend in the class. The teacher will lead a short discussion with
the students on how they can be a good friend and some strategies they can use if
someone is being mean to them.
Assessment:
Students will be assessed throughout the lesson with participation through discussions,
participation in making the snack, and through the craft activity. Students will be called
up one by one to assess the story details and provide three ways they can be a good
friend.
Transition:
After fifteen minutes the teacher will turn off the lights to signal to the students to
stop working. Then the teacher will tell the students they have two minutes to clean up.
After two minutes the lights will go off again. Teacher will tell the students to have a
seat and will go around the room and award the cleanest table group. The teacher will
then call the table group to line up for Art.
