Lesson 3

Going back to basics #3 Multiplication

Lesson Overview: This lesson will focus on multiplication and the skills required to solve single
and double digit equations. Students will review the rules and techniques to multiplication. This
lesson should be a review for all 5th graders as multiplication is introduced in 3rd grade and
reinforced in 4th grade. The main objective for this lesson is to practice and reinforce the skills
and rules of multiplication.

Materials Needed:

iPad
Promethean White Board
Doceri
Worksheet #4 Multiplication

Learning Objective:
Students will know the rules and procedures to solve a single digit multiplication. Students are
expected to solve basic single digit multiplication problems mentally at a 100%. Students will
have to solve single to multi digit problems on Doceri with a 80% accuracy. Students will also
solve and work on double digit multi number equations and solve with a 80% accuracy on the
lesson assessment in Schoology.
Time: One class lesson (60 Minutes)

Classroom set-up: Students will be in their standard team of 5s. Each group facing the front of
the room.

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activity

Students will be given a real world multiplication problem that interests them. If you had to
hand out 3 pages to 23 people, how many pages would you have handed out? With this prompt
you will ask the students to solve this problem. The teacher will then have a student come to the
Smart board and show how they found the answer using mathematical procedures. Based on the
students response and answers to your questioning you can either do a few more problems or
move on.

Step 2: Content Presentation

1) The teacher will present 3 to 5 more multiplication problems (12*13), (136*8), (29*17).
2) All the students will solve the problem on Doceri at their desk.
3) With each problem the teacher will have a student come to the Smart board and solve it.
The student will have to explain the process as they solve the problem.
4) Using an interactive multiplication quiz, the students will use their iPad to log into
Kahoot.com. Once logged in the class will compete in a 30 question multiplication quiz.
a. Go to Kahoot.it
b. In search box input 5th grade basic multiplication
c. Choose 30 question quiz
d. Start quiz when students are ready
Step 3: Learner Participation
1) Students will use their iPads to complete the multiplication worksheet. The worksheet
will be on Schoology (LMS) which will provide instant feedback and a score once
completed.
2) At all times the teacher will be at the back table to offer help and extra instruction to any
student who does not understand or is stuck.
Step 4: Assessment
1) With the students using Schoology they will be able to get a score instantly from the
worksheets they completed.
2) Using the feedback and score the students must go back and resolve any problem they
missed to achieve the 80% goal.
3) The students will check off their completed worksheets with a 80% score to the
teacher.
4) If 80% or higher is achieved and there is still time left, students can log onto Khan
Academy and work on 5th grade Multiplication problems.

Step 5: Follow Through Activities

Students will be required to pass off problems as exit tickets throughout the day. Each time the
students go to a special like computers, library, lunch, or recess the students will be required to

answer a multiplication problem to leave. This allows the teacher to assess each student on an
individual basis and requires the student to possess the skills to solve random equations.
