About TASB
The Texas Association of School Boards was founded in 1949. It is a voluntary, nonprofit that
serves and represents local school districts all over the state of Texas. TASBs primary
responsibilities include promoting educational excellence for Texas schoolchildren through
advocacy, visionary leadership, and high quality services to school districts (TASB.org). TASB
values the following characteristics and vows to do right by: ethics, responsiveness, trust,
leadership, strategic alliances, innovation, quality of services, fiscal responsibility, and diversity.
Support for Schools
More often than not, the media twists the truth about school related incidents to get a rise out of
the public. Fortunately, TASB offers several ways to help the public speak out for public schools
and what they are doing right. TASB offers different forums such as: The Truth About Schools,
Stand Up For Texas Public Schools, My Texas Public School, and Fund Public School. These
efforts range from dispelling myths and make accurate information about public schools, to
answering questions parents of new Texas schools may have. To help create a positive image for
public schools, TASB also offers ways to help build support for schools. TASB has posted
several articles on school districts in Texas that have been successful in general district
communications, community partnerships and family resource centers, and social media that are
to be used for inspiring others districts in the state.
Legislative
One major goal of TASB is to represent and support school boards when laws are passed
affecting Texas school districts. The Governmental Relations Division takes part in monitoring
legislative developments, keeping members up to date on activities, as well as promoting TASBs
Advocacy Agenda face-to-face with numerous agencies. Further dealing with legalities, the
TASB website offers a resource center that brings together reports, analyses, and articles on
school related topics. Topics include: children at risk, school finance, school transformation, tax
ratification election, religion in public schools, personnel and HR services, students, and school
district business operations.
