1. Newspaper Article: Outcome 8.1.5 -For the Writers
You are now a News Reporter in Japan! Write a newspaper article describing
one of the natural disasters that took place in Edo Japan. The newspaper
must be at least two paragraphs in length and must contain:
1. Images that illustrate the natural disaster
2. Description of the island before the natural disaster
3. Description and explanation of the natural disaster itself
4. Description of the island after the natural disaster
5. Explanation of the importance of the ocean to the Japanese
people
2. Travel Brochure: Outcomes 8.1.1 + 8.1.5
-For the Arts & Crafts people
You are a travel agent, trying to persuade people to travel to Japan in the Edo
period! Create a travel brochure for Edo Japan (1600-1868). Your job is to
promote Edo Japan as an ideal travel destination to escape from the stress of
everyday life. Describe through words and images why isolation in Edo Japan
is a good thing. You must include:
1. A map of the country
2. Images of Japan (geography and society)
3. A slogan that promotes isolation
4. Specific details about Japans landscape and geography
3. Eulogy to the Shogun and the 47 Ronin: Outcome 8.1.4. & 8.1.3 -For
the Writers

You must write two eulogies/ speeches in memory of dead people- Each
eulogy must be one paragraph in length, for a total of two paragraphs.
The first one: Create a eulogy for the 47 Ronin (From that story in your
textbook)
The second one: Create a eulogy for the Shogun (Tokugawa Ieyasu).
In both of the Eulogies you must include:
1. A brief description of their job/career, and the specific things that they
in that job.
2. A brief description of their beliefs and values.

You are now a great, and powerful ruler named the Tokugawa Ieyasu, ruling
over Edo Japan! Write a speech as if you have just become the Shogun, to
address the nation. You must explain how you will use your new power to
create a powerful and long lasting government in Japan. Involve the ways
that he promotes isolation and the specific things that he does when he is in
power. This must be a minimum of 2 paragraphs in length. This will be written
only and not performed.

These paragraphs must include specific details about:


1. What the Shogun did to try and increase his own power.
2. How the Shogun improved or changed the country of Japan and/or
Japans economy.
3. An explanation of how the Shoguns rule reflects Japans overall
worldview (their desire to be isolated, and to be a unified,
Collectivist society)
5. Propaganda Poster: Outcome 8.1.4
-For the Artists
Create a one page poster that depicts the Shoguns Exclusion Laws and
reinforces Japans isolation.
You must include:
1. A slogan that promotes Japanese inclusion and exclusion of other
cultures and other people. You should consider specific
2. A drawn image that illustrates your slogan
3. A one paragraph explanation on the back of the poster about how this
propaganda poster relates to Japans worldview.
6. Mini-Magazine: Outcome 8.1.2 & 8.1.4

You are now a journalist for a famous publishing company in Japan! Create a
4 page, mini magazine that reflects the world views of Edo Japan. Create a
paragraph for each of these four worldviews on a separate page each:
1. Economy
2. Society
3. Values and Beliefs
4. Geography
Each page should include a brief description of each worldview, matched
with images that illustrate the description.
