Indonesia Doesn't Need Two Electronic ID Cards:

Jakarta Governor
Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo blasted the National Police's $4.7 million
electronic identification card system on Monday, questioning the practicality
of the program when the government is already rolling out a similar ID card.
In advanced nations with advanced systems, the citizens dont [carry] too
many cards, Fauzi said on Monday. Why people should [carry] a wad of
cards?
The National Police's ID card dubbed the Indonesia Automatic Fingerprint
Identification System (Inafis) would integrate the nation's fingerprint bank
with photo identification, bank account numbers and other data. Police
officials say the card was an important part of crime prevention.
But critics say the Inafis is a waste of money when the government's e-KTP
card serves a similar purpose.
Any advances in Indonesia's identification card system should be rolled into a
single card, Fauzi said on Monday, adding that Jakarta's administration is still
deciding whether the Inafis card will be used in the capital regardless of
whether it gets off the ground or not.
National Police officials will evaluate the usefulness of the program, police
spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said.
But the organization has no plans to cancel the Inafis card, he added.
This is actually [part of a] process to modernize the police [system] that has
been ongoing for three years, he said. We have [spent Rp 28.3 billion on]
the fingerprint machines and installed them in 41 places.
The National Police have already issued 2,000 Inafis cards.
