OPTION C: ABORTION

By:Madison Hogge

QUESTION
The topic of abortion is very controversial, but nothing has ever been learned by avoiding tough
subjects. What are your views on abortion? Under what circumstances, if any, would you
consider it? If you were a lawmaker, what would be your stand on this issue? (*In India, boys
are valued more than girls and amniocentesis has become widespread. In one province, only one
in thousands of abortions following: amniocentesis was that of a male fetus, the rest were
females. How do you feel about abortion as a tool for gender selection? Suppose that one of the
female fetuses in the previous example was also identified as having suffered severe mental and
physical damage to the point that, after birth, the resulting child would mentally and physically
be unable to care for itself. Would this information influence (change) your decision?)
ANSWER
Is the topic of abortion a worldly problem, or just a moral standpoint? I disagree with the
procedure of abortions. Many activists talk as if it is obvious that abortion is morally wrong or as
if it is obvious that a woman has every right to have an abortion. (Meyers, 2010, p.7) There are
two very strong sides to this argument and lots of technical ideas. I dont think abortion should
be an option. Isnt it relatively close to murder? Doesnt a fetus have a soul too?
It would have to be a very large circumstance for me to consider an abortion. If I had
done an amniocentesis procedure and learned that my baby was so damaged and sick that I could
not care for it in the modern world, then yes I would consider. I think this influences lots of
change in decisions with other people also. No human being deserves to suffer. If he or she
cannot stand alone in this world, he or she cant stand anywhere.
If I were a lawmaker confronting the problems of abortion, it would be very hard. In
some cases I think I would have to block out my own personal views. That I think would be the
hardest part. But I also think I would still stand by my original statement that I disagree with
abortions. That fetus needs someone to protect and stand up for her/him. If I were a lawmaker I

would have the power to do that. I think we have a responsibility to take into account the big
decisions for little things.
Amniocentesis is a procedure where amniotic fluid is ejected from a pregnant womans
stomach to test and detect if the baby has any abnormalities or dysfunctions. I think this is very
beneficial to help families make further decisions about what kind of a life their baby will have.
But many believe after an ultrasound or amniocentesis usually follows an abortion. It can justify
the knowledge that an abortion needs to take place. In some cases, these tests can be doing more
harm than good. (Berlatsky, 2011, p.169)
It has also become a tool of gender selection. It has especially become a widespread
practice in developing countries like India and china, where males are more valued than females.
I dont agree with this kind of selection because this can become a population and social issue.
(Berlatsky, 2011, p.121) There are better ways to choose the sex. For example, artificial
insemination, etc. I dont think we should have abortions just because of preference.
If we choose abortion as an option for all of the risks of babies being born with problems,
who will be left? (digital.films.com). As many babies being born, we must think also how many
are being aborted. There are a lot more in foreign countries because our social standing is much
different from theirs. In China, their one-child policy initiated in 1979 cut the birth rate in half
and also led to a lot more abortions. In modern day 2015 the Chinese are allowed to have two
children, but prenatal determination sex still occurs. (Berger, 2014, p.52-53)
Even though the argument of abortion has two very controversial sides, I still think that
abortion is morally wrong. I think the best option if you cannot care for a baby would be
adoption. It is a more beneficial option and now that baby doesnt just have a plan, but he/she has
a life. A person is a person, no matter how small. Dr. Seuss
