BY: Angelica Colmenero

History of heroin
Opium and Morphine were developed in 1810
Named after the Greek god of dreams,

Morpheus in 1811
Northern and confederate soldiers became
morphine addicts (morphine epidemic)
1874 when heroin was announced to being
the cure for the morphine addicts

Heroin is made from the opium poppy that is

grown in Asia, Turkey, Pakistan and Laos thats
stretched an average of about 4,500 miles across
the mountains.

Originally heroin was made to cure the people that

were addicted to morphine but ended up being
even more addicted.

and renamed to
methadone

How heroin works in the brain

Effects the opiate
receptors
Creates intense
euphoria
Depresses the central
nervous system and
spinal cord
Heroin relaxes and slows down the motor function, its the reason
why users feel so relaxed and tired when taking heroin and also a
very simple way of how they overdose while they sleeping since
it slows down there breathing.

that
Pregnant women can often cause the baby to come

with born
Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS).
Heroin Passes through the placenta to the fetus making the baby
to become dependent as well.
Treatment for NAS is also treated with morphine to wean the
baby and the mother off of the opioid use so they can be able to
function without the heroin in the body

Methadone: agonist active opioid receptor
Buprenorphine: partial agonist but produces a lesser
response
Naltrexone: antagonist blocks the receptors

Treatment for pregnant mothers can

benefit the babies with buprenorphine
A NIDA-funded clinical trial
found buprenorphine to be a
safe and effective alternative
to methadone for treating
opioid dependent mothers
who are pregnant.
Buprenorphine was found to
be effective in lowering the
risk of neonatal abstinence
syndrome in newborns born
to opioid-dependent mothers.
