Differentiating Instruction through Technology
When it comes to educating a classroom a teacher must remember that no two students
are alike. Creating a curriculum is like buying a tee shirt; you never purchase a tee shirt that says
one size fits all and expects it to do just that. No two students learn the same way just like no
two bodies are the same. A major benefit with the use of technology in the classroom is the
ability to differentiate instructions to meet the needs of every student no matter what their
learning style maybe or disability. Everyone processes and learns new information in different
ways. There are three main cognitive learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.
{Cuyamaca College. (2003). Visual learning.}
Being those different students learn in different ways there are more than on ways to get
an answer from the student. One subject that the students will be learning is mathematics. All
students must reach certain standards for the core curriculum in order to advance to the next
grade level and successful completes their current one. There are many different programs out
there that teach mathematics skills but very few that help students with their individual learning
needs. Take addition for example: One student might use the concept of counting by using
groups of blocks, another student might get it by looking at a ruler, and another student might
prefer to work with balance. They all are proper ways to do mathematics but fit each students

individual needs. There is a learning system called, Gummii, that allows this and makes it
possible. Gummii recognizes the fact that concepts need to be presented in a variety of ways, so
that the students can explore and grasp them in whatever way fits their learning needs. Gummii
is an innovative, game-based math learning system that builds kids motivation and adapts to
their individual learning needs.{www.gummii.com} Gummii makes education not just fun for
all students about plausible for each learning style as well.
ISTE National Educational Technology Standards for students (NETS-S) requires
creativity, innovation, communication, co libation, research, information fluency, critical
thinking, problem solving and decision making. {http://www.iste.org/standards/istestandards/standards-for-students} Gummii fits all of these criterias and so much more. It allows
the students to learn in a creative way and allows them to utilize critical thinking as well as
problem solving.
Another great system that motivates kids to want to learn through fun activates is Zoo
whiz. Zoo whiz is a curriculum-based site that is motivational to learning. This site covers many
subjects such as Math, Comprehension, Punctuation, Grammar, etc Zoo whiz offers the ability
to have a detailed progress reports. This allows the teachers to help assess students learning
needs. Zoo whiz offers a structure learning environments for the students to access a variety of
learning styles that suite their educational needs. ISTE National Educational Technology
Standards for students (NETS-S) requires creativity, innovation, communication, co libation,
research, information fluency, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making.
{http://www.iste.org/standards/iste-standards/standards-for-students} zoo whiz fits all of these
criterias and so much more. It allows the students to learn in a creative way and allows them to

utilize critical thinking as well as problem solving. It allows the teachers the ability to research
what learning technique is best for each individual student.
The last educational site that is a beneficial tool for the teachers to utilize with their
students is called, Power My Learning. Power my learning is a great technological tool for
educators to deliver Differentiated Instruction. It allows teachers to customize the learning
experience for each student, individual needs. It provides a powerful set of f tools that are free as
well as helpful to differentiate instruction. Power my learning supports learning in the classroom
as well as at home. Power My Learning eliminates the guesswork that goes into finding the right
activates for Differentiating Instruction. It also has the most engaging activities that are available
for free on the Web. It was created by a team of educators. Each program has carefully selected
with thousands of academic games, videos, and other interactive content according to subject,
grade, Common Core Standard for states and lastly students learning needs. ISTE National
Educational Technology Standards for students (NETS-S) requires creativity, innovation,
communication, co libation, research, information fluency, critical thinking, problem solving and
decision making. {http://www.iste.org/standards/iste-standards/standards-for-students} power my
learning fits all of these criterias and so much more. It allows the students to learn in a creative
way and allows them to utilize critical thinking as well as problem solving. It allows the teachers
the ability to research what learning technique is best for each individual student.
Each student is sport using their own individual learning style. Each student has an
individual learning plan. It allows the teacher to be creative so this way no child is left behind.
Since differentiated instruction to means each student is being scored in a way that fits their
individual needs there's less of a possibility of a child being held back a grade level. It also
allows flexibility in the classroom. Sadly there is a downside to differentiating instruction using

technology as well. It's very time constraint. When a teacher has to plan a multitude amount of
lesson plans to fit each individual needs it makes it harder for the teacher to how much they can
get done in the classroom at a certain period of time. Children learn at different paces so for
some they might be a lot slower than others which can hold back the lesson plans. That makes it
harder for the teacher should be able to have a schedule and to stick to it.
