Approximately 60 minutes
The students will be able to find a
percentage of a group (of objects,
people, and so on.)
The students will be able to order
fractions and justify their order
through reasoning about fraction
equivalents and relationships.

Objectives

Common Core State Standards

Prerequisites

The students will be able to add and

subtract fractions through reasoning
about fraction equivalents and
relationships.
The students will be able to
demonstrate understanding of
fractions (equivalents, ordering,
reducing, adding, subtracting,
improper/mixed.) This lesson will
serve as a review of all of the above
in order to prepare for their end-ofunit assessment that will be given
tomorrow.
5.NF.1. Add and subtract fractions
with unlike denominators (including
mixed numbers) by replacing the
given fractions with equivalent
fractions in such a way as to produce
an equivalent sum or difference of
fractions with like denominators.
5.NF.2. Solve word problems involving
addition and subtraction of fractions
referring to the same whole, including
cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by
using visual fraction models or
equations to represent the problem.
Use benchmark fractions and number
sense fractions to estimate mentally
and assess the reasonableness of
answers.
The students should understand the

difference between the numerator

and denominator.

Materials

The students should have

background knowledge on equivalent
fractions, comparing fractions,
ordering fractions, finding common
denominators of fractions, adding
fractions, and subtracting fractions.

Daily Data
Students will come in and complete
their daily data that is given to them.
They will record this in their daily
journals. Once all students have
completed this, we will discuss the
answers and explanations.
Read Aloud
I will begin the lesson by reading
The Hersheys Milk Chocolate
Fractions Book by Jerry Pallotta. This
book will review students previous
learned knowledge of fractions in a
fun and exciting way. The students
will be engaged throughout the read
aloud as they work with their
Hersheys bar paper printed visual in
various ways as directed throughout
the book and lesson. This book will
serve as a good review for the
students before they take their endof-unit assessment tomorrow (Friday,
Novemember 21, 2014.)
Table Stations
After the read aloud, students will
remain in their desks and will be
working as table groups. There are 4
tables so there will be 4 groups with
3-4 students in each group. The
students will begin with the station
that is at their table group. The
students will complete the game or
activity that is provided there. The
students will rotate to a different
table after 10-15 minutes of working
at the current station.

As the students work at the stations

to review and prepare for tomorrows

assessment, I will walk around the
room and assist any students that are
struggling. I will conduct informal
assessments at this time by using a
checklist for each station.
Once all of the students have rotated
and ended back at their original
desks, they will complete an exit
ticket. They will place the exit ticket
in the designated area on the chart
that I have created.

Accommodations

Assessments

In order to accommodate the needs

of all learners within the classroom, I
will provide frequent checks for
accuracy when students are doing
classwork. I will also cut down the
number of problems that they will
complete in order to achieve quality
over quantity. Their amount of
homework will also be decreased.
They will be allowed to use
calculators.
I will conduct informal assessments
throughout the rotations of math
stations by using a checklist. I will
also have the students complete an
exit ticket before leaving the
classroom and place it in an envelope
on the Ticket Out The Door board.
