Chapter 10 Assignment
Classroom management is perhaps the biggest part of and most challenging aspect of
teaching. If you cant manage your classroom effectively than there is no difference between you
as the teacher and the student. You lead them to success and they follow. Things to consider in
your classroom management are creating a positive learning environment, planning and
procedures, involving the parents, and classroom rules.
The first thing that you will do as a teacher is create your classroom rules, this is the
foundation to building a learning environment and the procedures that follow. You should make
rules that are feasible to students but allow certain flexibilities. For example with handing in
assignments, you should have your due dates and possibly a couple of late days with loss of
points. After that it is not accepted unless a doctors note provides proof that the assignment
could not be completed in time. Another flexible rule would be talking out of turn, yes it should
be corrected, but in the right way. No one should be sent to the principals office unless there is
no other way to handle the situation, such as a near violent conclusion, other than that a simple
correction should suffice. Other rules however such as no hitting or no cheating should be
enforced fully because there is no excuse for it. This is all to maintain your stature as the leader
of the classroom (Kauchak and Eggen, pg. 317-318.)

Planning and Procedures kind of goes along with this because procedures are followed by
what the rules state. You should plan how each class should go with a beginning, middle, and
end. For example at the beginning of class you could have a mini pop quiz (either daily or
whenever seen fit) and have it be on either the homework last night to test for comprehension or
on what you will learn today so that you can see where everybody is at the beginning of the
lesson. For the middle part of class this is where you will do your lecture on todays topic, this
can take any amount of time and can fill the whole class if need be and be the end of the lecture.
Then for the end part of the class you can give out and talk about example test questions to see
what was learned that day and to help review for tests or you can just provide time to do
homework (Kauchak and Eggen, pg. 317-318.)
Creating a positive learning environment is something that comes natural with the rules
and procedures in your day to day class. Other factors can include how you ask questions to the
class. If you open up all of your questions to people who raise their hands or tell everyone to just
call out an answer, some students will hide and not answer for fear of having the wrong answer.
This is not a bad way to ask questions, in fact it can be great because it may save time. However
if you decide to call upon people, even every now and then, you can bring in the outliers and
teach them its ok to answer question right or wrong. No one is always right and not often is there
only one right answer, this can be a good opportunity to teach the kids creativity (depending on
the subject) because you can get abstract responses that are although different, they are still
correct (Kauchak and Eggen, pg. 314-316.)
Involving the parents is a very simple yet very effective step in the education of your
students. It can be as simple as a monthly email stating what we have been doing in class and
whats next. Along with the occasional email about what can the child improve on so that the

parent can maybe work with them at home. Parents can have a really big impact on their
children, especially in their education. Without providing the parents with the information
needed to help their students there is no chance that it will happen. This is also very good
because then the parents will know that you care and maybe realize that their child isnt actually
doing badly because of their teacher (Kauchak and Eggen, pg. 320-324.)
If you can find a way to bring all of these thing together in a cohesive manner, your
classroom environment will shine. Having to manage your own classroom can be difficult but
there are steps to follow to make it easier, each step is a building block to get to the final result.
As long as you have a strong passion for teaching and the drive to succeed you can fulfill all of
these requirements and have a successful classroom.
