The specific gravity, S.G. of the dam in Figure 1 below is 2.63, and the coefficient of
friction, between the dam and the foundation is 0.53. Assume that the uplift pressure
has a triangular distribution maximum at heel and minimum at toe with magnitude of
60% of the maximum hydrostatic pressure, Pw.
Check the gravity dam below in terms of sliding stability and overturning stability only,
giving that the factor of safety for sliding and overturning is 1.0 respectively.
