ISP-001: Proxmox Virtual Environment (1.2)

12/28/2010

1. Introduction
Proxmox Virtual Environment (Proxmox VE) is an open-source virtualization platform which is used
for running virtual machines. It has backup, restore and live migration as the most important
features.

1.1.

Purpose of document

The purpose of this document is to give information on how to use the Proxmox virtualization
platform for running virtual machines.

1.2.

Scope of document

This document mainly covers the Proxmox virtual environment in the CareNet network.

1.3.

Audience of document

This document is aimed at the CareNet technical team that is responsible for the network
management.

2. Installation
The complete operating system (Debian Lenny 64), Backup/Restore tools, Proxmox VE Kernel with
OpenVZ and KVM support, and web based management tools are installed through Proxmox VE
installation and the hard drive is partitioned with LVM2.
Here are the steps to install the Proxmox VE:
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)

Download the ISO image and burn it on a CD

Network lead plugged into eth0 (usually NIC 1)
Boot from CD
Follow the instructions
Login via SSH and upgrade [1]

3. Virtual Machines
In order to create virtual machines go to VM Manager Virtual Machines Create. There
you will see the following options where the offered and default values of them are given in front of
each item:

3.1.

Configuration

Type: Container (OpenVZ)

Template: proxmox-mailgateway
Hostname: The server name
Memory (MB): default (512 MB)
Swap (MB): default (512 MB)
Password: The root password
VMID: The virtual machine ID
Cluster Node: server01 (192.16.126.72)
Start at boot: The Virtual Machine will start on reboot of the Proxmox VE server
Disk space (GB): Specify the size of the disk it will not be pre-allocated so give enough as
changing later is not possible without command line interactions and guest specific issues.
However the default space is 10 GB which is generally enough for most tasks.

Network

We use the bridged networking mode in our Proxmox server. The model is e1000 and the bridge is
vmbr0.
Under Ethernet Devices configure eth0 to vmbr0. In the Domain server we bridge tap0 and eth0
interfaces to br0 and in others it is eth0 bridging.
Network Type: Virtual Network (vnet)
IP Address: IP address which has to be assigned to the VM
DNS domain: carenet-se.se
First DNS Server: 192.16.126.66
Second DNS Server: 192.16.124.50

4. Main features of Proxmox VE

4.1.

Backup and restore

The backup procedure in Proxmox is done using the VZDump utility (more information can be found
in the [ISP-005] Backup Configurations document).
In order to restore a VM the .tar file should be copied to where we want to restore the VM.
VZRestore is used to restore OpenVZ containers and to restore KVM machines qmrestore is used.

4.2.

Live migration

Live migration of virtual machines in Proxmox migrates from one physical machine to another and
there should be at least two Proxmox VE servers. [2]

5. Virtual machines in the CareNet network

There are 5 virtual machines running on the main server of the CareNet network (192.16.126.72).
The 5 virtual machines are sip, domain, management, log and portal servers.
