INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL OVERVIEW

Instructional Materials Overview

BeaconLBS as administrators for United Healthcares Laboratory Benefit Management
Program have created a retrospective advanced notification add-in system as a solution to a 48%
overall compliance by providers. Discussions are underway to release the retrospective system
known as PDS-Q to specific providers. A training need is required to address a large volume of
users in an efficient and explanatory manner through email communication.
The instructional materials being developed for the BeaconLBS PDS-Q learners will be a
blended learning system which includes Self-Instruction and Technology-Based Training. The
learning materials will include a User Guide which will be screen shots and explanations for
each step and learning objective. In creating the User Guide the process will assist in creating the
the structure for the video tutorial. Learners will be able to choose their method of learning
whether they are audio, visual, or tactile. The video demonstration will provide a clear simulated
live experience while the User Guide can be used as a resource for application. The video
demonstration will be available through a Vimeo link in the PFD document. This will allow for
faster retrieval by offices and keep the file size sent to offices smaller.
The decision for self-instruction is backed up by the checklist provided by Piskurich (2006)
on page 95. Self-instruction is a positive delivery method as offices may have high turnover,
need just in time training, training process needs consistency, content is stable, training may
need to be repeated often, and training for multiple shifts may be required. Another support for
this type of delivery is that BeaconLBS needs to decrease the cost of travel for their trainer. The
Technology-Based Training is supported by the checklist by Piskurich on page 96, selfinstruction is needed, training is difficult to schedule, and use of multiple media formats will
enhance the learning. I will also add the fact that self-training through technology will allow

hands on learning (tactile) with applicable application as learners will use real data (Strickland,
2015).

Assessment Instrument
BeaconLBS does not use assessment instruments however we do create job aids. According to
Piskurich (2006) the trainee performs the task or series of tasks having practiced in a real
environment. The checklist gives the evaluator a place to check where completed. In the case of
BeaconLBS the learner will be their own evaluator. The checklist was made as a combination
self-assessment and job aid to assist in learning as well as a reminder of steps.
