Medical Terminology for Health Professions

EASyR Revisions

Unit 1: Basic Terminology Components-Pre-Revision

This is the first full module of the course. In this module, the student will start by reading an
interactive PowerPoint about basic medical terms, how terms are broken down into parts, and
term origins. After reading and listening to the PowerPoint, the student uses interactive
flashcards to test their knowledge. They will then complete a worksheet on the terms as well as
questions about their readings. They will then take a low-stakes quiz. This course is solely in an
online environment and this specific content wasnt taught face-to-face.
Objectives:
1. Describe the origin of medical language
2. Analyze the component parts of a medical term and use basic prefixes, suffixes, and
combining forms to build medical terms
3. Explain common rules for proper medical term formation, pronunciation, and spelling of
medical terms
Unit 1: Basic Terminology Components-Post-Revision
Pre-Revision, Post-Revision content
After reading an interactive PowerPoint about basic medical terms, how terms are broken
down into parts, and term origins, the students will evaluate the extent of their knowledge
by using the interactive flashcards to test themselves. The student will further evaluate
their knowledge by completing a worksheet and taking a quiz online. The student will then
analyze what topics they are struggling with by examining questions they answered
incorrectly and then will be required to create a list (analysis) of areas in which they
struggled during the module. The students will examine the list and figure out what areas
seem to be problem areas for them (synthesis). The students will then use their list to create
(synthesis) a strategy to help them remember this information in the future. They will
discuss this strategy with their classmates in a discussion forum.

Revisions:
The revisions that were made will help the students not only be more interactive with the
material, but also use higher level thinking to help them engage and remember the material more
effectively. Although the content was there, added activities such as picking out areas for

improvement from their assessments as well as creating a list and a strategy to help them
remember the rules of creating medical terms for the future. The discussion with classmates will
give them even more ideas as to how to better remember the information.
