Task 2: ranking
Consider these factors carefully, then choose nine that you think are important in deciding
where to live. Write them in rank order on this grid. In position 1, write the most important
factor. In position 2, write the next two most important factors. Then write the 3 middle
importance factors. In position 4, write two that are less important. Then write the least
important factor. Make a brief note of your reasons in the boxes too.

Task 3: discussion
Now get into a group with other students. Compare your individual rankings and reasons.
Agree a group ranking of the factors. You will need to discuss your ideas in detail. Make sure
you listen carefully to everyones reasons.
When you have finished, your teacher will ask one person from each group to explain their
ranking to the rest of the class. Listen carefully. Make a note of what other groups say. How
are their ideas similar to yours? How are their ideas different to yours? Do you agree with their
reasons? Do you disagree?
Task 4: collocations
Look at the sets of adjectives on the cards below. Match one set of adjectives with each of our
12 key words/phrases, then use them to form more descriptive collocations. Try writing some
sentences using these collocations. Are there any other adjectives you could add to each set?
Task 5: cause and effect
Can you see any cause-effect relationships between the 12 key words/phrases? Describe
these, using any of the collocations you find useful.
These could be positive cause-effect relationships.
e.g. A good education system improves the economy of a country.
Or they could be negative cause-effect relationships.
e.g. Compulsory military service decreases the quality of citizens lives.
Write down the cause-effect relationships you identify.
Take it further
If you enjoyed thinking about these ideas, you might also enjoy creating your own country! Go
