Welcome to 7th grade Social Studies at Crofton Middle School!

Course Overview

In this course, students continue their study of world regions in order to answer the question, How did
geography and history shape the modern world? Students begin by studying medieval and modern Europe,
then they study the geography, history, and selected current events in the Middle East, Central Asia, and East
Asia. They will also read and analyze content specific materials: maps, charts, tables, graphs, primary sources
and political cartoons. Service Learning opportunities and real world connections are integrated throughout the
year.

Common Core Literacy Standards for Social Studies


Students will be building their social studies/historical literacy skills as outlined in the Common Core Literacy
Standards. These standards focus on ensuring that students are college and career ready when they graduate
from high school. These standards focused on in this course include:

Write arguments focused on discipline specific content.

Write informative/ explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/
experiments, or technical processes.

Conduct short research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question), drawing on several
sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration.

Grading Policy
Grades are calculated using the following weighted scale:
Homework
10%
Quizzes/Tests/Projects
40%
Classwork
45%
Quarterly County Assessment
5%
Grading rubrics, when appropriate, will be handed out prior to certain assignments.
Parents, guardians and students are encouraged to log-on to ParentCONNECT throughout the year to monitor
academic progress. Any parent who does not have a log-on and password for ParentCONNECT should contact
Crofton Middle Schools office staff. Any student who is in danger of failing this course, or who has dropped at
least two letter grades for the marking period, will be notified by the teacher.

Homework
Students are responsible for writing down homework assignments in the Agenda Book and turning them in to
the bin on time. Homework may be posted on individual teachers Blackboard sites as well. Homework is not
always a written assignment and does include reviewing/organizing notes and studying for assessments.

Make-up Work
When absent, it is the students responsibility to obtain the make-up work and complete it at home.
Check the absent bulletin board for missing assignments. A note excusing the absence must be turned in to the
homeroom teacher.

Redo Policy
Students will have the opportunity to redo assignments, but this does NOT include homework and
Quarterly County Assessments. Students may redo a chunk of a project but may not redo the project in its
entirety. Students will have 10 days from the day the assignment was returned to complete the redo. In order to
redo the assignment, students must:
Have turned in the original assignment on time
Meet with the teacher during the Targeted Learning Opportunity (TLO) session to receive extra help.
The TLO session attended must be the first session after the graded assignment was returned by the
teacher.

Late Work Policy (Not Including Homework)

Classwork assignments will have a due date. The following deductions will occur for assignments handed in late:
Days 1 to 4 late 10% reduction in grade
Day 5 late 20% reduction in grade
Day 6 and later zero credit given

After School Help Targeted Learning Opportunity (TLO)


Teachers are available after school on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Tuesday of each month for extra help from 3-4pm.
Students are required to sign up in advance for the session with the individual teacher. An activity
bus will be available to take students home.

Being prepared for class is the best way to ensure that every student will be a successful learner.
3-ring binder with labeled dividers for sections (Drills, Classwork, Homework and
Tests/Quizzes)
Dry erase marker for white boards
Highlighter
Pens (blue or black ink ONLY!)
1 pack of Markers and 1 pack of colored pencils
Pencils & erasers (replenish throughout the year)
Agenda Book

Classroom Rules

Be RESPECTFUL of yourself, others and your learning environment


Come to class on time. The schools tardy policy will be followed and enforced
Be in assigned seat when the bell rings. Have materials and Agenda out on desk
Sharpen pencils BEFORE class begins
One (1) student at a time may use the restroom
Name (first AND last) & period # must be on all work
Pencil or blue / black ink only!
Clean up and organize table and surrounding area before leaving at the end of the period.
Teacher dismisses students, not the bell
No gum, candy, food or beverages allowed

Academic Integrity
Students are expected to exhibit academic honesty in the completion of all course assignments, exams and other
instructional activities. Cheating, fabrication, plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty will not be
tolerated and will result in discipline or academic consequences. Printing or copying web pages and turning them
in as original work is not accepted.
