Master Inspection Characteristic

Purpose
Master Inspection characteristic describes the inspection criteria for materials, parts,
and products. You can create master inspection characteristics at the plant level to simplify
and standardize the inspection planning activities and to standardize the nomenclature.

Definition
An inspection characteristic is created as a master record. This characteristic is intended for
frequent use in inspection plans or for evaluation purposes across all inspection plans. Master
inspection characteristics are language-independent.

Use
You use master inspection characteristics in inspection plans, material specifications, and
certificate profiles to simplify and standardize data entry.

Integration

Use master inspection characteristics in inspection plans, material specifications, and

certificate profiles.
Link master inspection characteristics to class characteristics.
Assign inspection methods to master inspection characteristics.
Assign selected sets and code groups to master inspection characteristics.

Master inspection characteristic of two types:

1. Quantitative Inspection characteristic.
2. Qualitative Inspection characteristic.

Copy Model/Reference Characteristic

List field, in which you can select an option for identifying the master inspection characteristic.
Use
If you identify the master inspection characteristic as a "Complete copy model or "Reference
copy model", the system checks whether the master inspection characteristic, dependent on the
control indicators, was completely maintained.
The system checks, for example, whether you need to enter the tolerance limits here, if you
create a master inspection characteristic with quantitative tolerance limits.
Reference characteristic option
if you use the master inspection characteristic in a task list or material specification, a
reference is first created to this characteristic. You can, however, cancel this reference
and change the data individually (for example, tolerances).
Complete copy model option
if you use the master inspection characteristic in a task list or material specification, the
reference to this characteristic is canceled. You can therefore immediately change the
data (for example, tolerances). You can then only use this master inspection
characteristic as a copy model.
Incomplete copy model
if you use the master inspection characteristic in a task list, this can only be used as a
copy model. This type of master inspection characteristic cannot be used in a material
specification.

Creating a Master Inspection Characteristic (Quantitative)

relevant indicator in Customizing.

Description
To make it easier for you to define the control indicators for an inspection
characteristic, you can define a predefined combination of control
indicators in Customizing. You can then use indicators in an inspection
plan or master inspection characteristic.
If you set this indicator, it causes the characteristic to be treated as a
quantitative characteristic. You thereby define the control indicators that
are relevant for the inspection characteristic. A quantitative characteristic
is subject to measurement inspections. You can define tolerance limits and
a target value for a quantitative characteristic.

Status of Master Record

Status
Being created

Effects
If you create a master record, the system proposes the status "Being
created" You can, however, change this status. You cannot use master
records with this status.

Released

Before you can create a reference to the master record, you must release
it by setting the status to "Released".

Can no longer be
used

If a master record is no longer to be used, you must set the status to

"Can no longer be used". Master records that are already being used are
not affected by this status.

Deletion flag

To delete a master record during the next archiving run, you need to set
the status to Deletion flag. A batch program then checks, if references
exist to the master record. In addition, it also checks the actual usage and
not the usage indicator.
If no references exist to the master record, it is deleted. If however, a
reference exists, the master record can only be deleted, if the reference
has first been deleted.
You can only delete a master record online, if no reference exists to it (the
usage indicator is not set).

5. Edit the control indicators and choose Continue.

The general data screen for the master inspection characteristic reappears.

R/O/C

If you set this indicator, you must enter a lower specification limit
for the inspection characteristic.

If you set this indicator, you must enter an upper specification

limit for the inspection characteristic

If you set this indicator and either the "Upper specification limit"
or "Lower specification limit" indicator, the system checks
whether the target value lies within the tolerance.

If you set this indicator, a sampling procedure must be assigned

to the characteristic in the task list.

If you set this indicator, a control chart is run for this

characteristic.
If you set this indicator, you must also set the "Sampling

procedure" indicator.
You must then enter an SPC criterion and a sampling procedure
with a control chart type in the task list for the SPC
characteristic.
Additive sample
If you set this indicator, in sample calculation, causes the size of
the partial sample to be increased by the quantity required for
this characteristic.
Destructive
You set this indicator for inspection characteristics whose
Inspection
samples will be destroyed when you inspect the characteristics.
This means that is no longer available. This quantity is used in
the usage decision as the proposed quantity for the posting to
sample.

Note:
If the indicator for the sampling procedure is not set in the master inspection characteristic,
the system uses the sampling procedure predefined in Customizing at plant level. If a sampling
procedure is not predefined at this level, the characteristic is subject to a 100% inspection.

Input Processing
Indicator

Indicator for inspection characteristics. Ensures that an

inspection characteristic is not characterized as either a
calculated characteristic or a characteristic for input processing.
You set this indicator when the inspection result for an inspection
characteristic is not to be processed further.

The indicator defines the characteristic as a calculated

characteristic.
You set this indicator if the inspection result for an inspection
characteristic is not determined through the inspection of this
characteristic, but on the basis of calculations using the
inspection results of other characteristics within the same
operation.
Indicator for inspection characteristics. This indicator ensures
that entries for an inspection characteristic are processed using
predefined rules (input processing).

Assigning Code Groups

Prerequisites
The code group(s) that you want to assign must already exist in the system.
Procedure
I. On the general data screen for the master inspection characteristic, choose Catalogs.
The Assigned Inspection Catalogs screen appears.
II. In field C, enter a catalog type.
You cannot assign selected sets from catalog type 1, to qualitative characteristics, for
which the characteristic attributes indicator is not set, or to quantitative characteristics.
IV. In the CGr/SSet field, enter the identifier for one or more code group(s). If necessary, use
the input help.
V. If necessary, in the Defect codes for rejection field, assign code groups and codes from the
defect catalog (catalog 9) to the master inspection characteristic. These are used to create a
defect data record for inspection characteristics that are rejected during results recording.
You can assign the following defect codes:
For a general rejection
For a rejection when the upper specification limit is exceeded
For a rejection when the lower specification limit is exceeded
If the Defects recording control indicator is set and you have not even maintained the
General rejection code, then manual defects recording is automatically called up during defects
recording, if a characteristic is rejected.

Assigning Inspection Methods

You can assign several inspection methods to a master inspection characteristic. However, you
can only assign one inspection method to an inspection characteristic in a task list.

6. If necessary, enter the following additional information:
