!Bienvenidos mis estudiantes! Welcome to the third year of Spanish class. In this course
you will continue to expand your knowledge of the target language and overall proficiency. Level
3 is taught mostly in Spanish. Students will continue to gain a multicultural perspective as they
further investigate their second language through oral activities, reading short stories,
composition writing, identifying viewpoints only available through the world language and its
cultures. Stay positive because we are going to learn a lot and have a lot of fun too! Here you
can find my expectations for you as world language learners.

National Standards for Students Learning a World Language

Standard 1 Communication: Communication is at the heart of second language study;
whether the communication involves understanding and producing interpersonal information
such as opinions and emotions, interpreting various texts and speech, or presenting on a
variety of topics to an audience.
Standard 2 Cultures: Through the study of other languages, students gain a knowledge and
understanding of the cultures that use that language and, in fact, cannot truly master the
language until they have also mastered the cultural contexts in which the language occurs. We
will focus on both the cultural products and practices of Spanish-speakers.
Standard 3 Connections: Learning languages provides connections to additional bodies of
knowledge that may be unavailable to the monolingual English speaker.
Standard 4 Comparisons: Through comparisons and contrasts with the language being
studied, students develop insight into the nature of language and the concept of culture and
realize that there are multiple ways of viewing the world.
Standard 5 Communities: Together, these elements enable the student of languages to
participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world in a variety of contexts
and in culturally appropriate ways.

Students in Spanish 3 will be able to:

Communicate about arts & entertainment, body & health, careers, ecology, extended family,
history, house & home, literature, media & technology, and expansion of level I & II topics.
Demonstrate an understanding of when to switch between tenses: preterite vs. imperfect, ser
vs. estar, por vs. para.
Identify the viewpoints that are only available within the cultures of the target language.
Make connections with the cultures of the target language with ones own culture to fully
understand the importance of culture within a language.
