Math This week we worked on adding and subtracting whole num-

bers and decimals. The key to adding and subtracting decimals is to

line up the decimal points before doing the math. We will be taking the
test over this chapter on Monday of next week.

Reading

Our story next week is about Satchel Paige, a black American baseball player. He played in the Negro Leagues before any
black players were allowed to play in the major leagues. We will work
on the reading skill of fact and opinion.

Grammar- We will work on identifying action and linking verbs.

Writing This week we began working on our Tall Tale stories. Stu-

dents were partnered up to finish a Tall Tale. They were given the beginning paragraph. They had to develop the plot and include characteristics of Tall Tales in their story. We will be working on this for the
next week.

Spelling- Our list focuses on adding ed and ing to base words.

The
final E is sometimes dropped. The Y sometimes changes to an I. The
final consonant is sometimes doubled. Practice carefully these differences. www.spellingcity.com/triton5

Social Studies We have finished our first unit on Geography of the

United States. Students took their first Social Studies on My Big Campus online yesterday. Next week we will move on to our Native American unit. Any student who failed the Geography test does have a
chance to retake it during their recess time.

Science-We reviewed what the Scientific Method is and participated

in a gummy worm experiment to apply the steps. We also moved on to
Lesson 2 in our books and read about types of investigations scientists perform.

Note From the Teacher:

Progress reports will be going home next week on Thursday. I talked with students this week about what needs to be done if they arent satisfied with their
grade. Homework that is failed (D or F) can have corrections made and submitted
for a new averaged grade. Many tests can be retaken. Part of the learning that will
be taking place this school year is students learning to take responsibility for their
own grades. I always tell them I cant do it for you, but I can give you every tool
and every opportunity to be successful. It seems that I do have a pretty responsible and driven group this year. Im looking forward to watching the students grow!
