RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:

Doctoral Researcher, Department of Education, University of York, 2012-16
Investigating the development of intercultural competencies in US undergraduates
participating in a semester abroad in Spain via a comparison of the three main study abroad
program types: direct enrolment, hybrid programs, and American study centers.
Also evaluate the perception of on-site study abroad administrators with regard to their
students learning, difficulties, and rationale for program selection.
Emphasis in research is placed on the development of communicative abilities, intercultural
communication adjustments, and sociocultural awareness.

Research Assistant, Research Methods Student Experience, University of York, 2015
Project investigating the experiences and perceptions of group student-led research
projects and undergraduate dissertations.
Methodologies used included questionnaires, analysed in SPSS, focus groups and one-to-one
interviews.

Doctoral Researcher, Derwent College Global Community, University of York, 2014-15
Co-founded and monitored development of the colleges first living-learning community, a
space for non-formal education around the theme of international development and human
rights.
Unique for this context, researchers employed community based research, accessing
content knowledge and expertise of Human Rights Defenders, educators, and
interculturalists and the participator experiences of global community members.
Research strategy included questionnaires, one-to-one interviews, participant observation,
and an international panel of experienced advisors.

Recognizing the need, applied for and received Rapid Response fund grant (with Dr.
Beatrice Szczepek Reed, Head of Department) of 1,041 to investigate international
postgraduate students adaptation to the demands and expectations of studying at York.
Conducted a needs assessment with the postgraduate population in the department to
determine which intercultural skills were most lacking in their experiences and training.
Used the results to create and teach autumn term course for incoming East Asian students
with reference to the research findings.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE CONT:

Researcher, Student Experience, Vanderbilt University Institutional Research Group, 2010
Conducted a series of interviews with first and third year students for a longitudinal study
assessing the impact of the Vanderbilt Visions orientation program on student acculturation
to the university.
The program was developed to emphasize student-faculty interaction and the intentional
creation of academic and social networks bringing together students and faculty outside of
the classroom.

RESEARCH INTERESTS:

Primary research interest in intercultural competence and communication studies including
the concept of culture; monochromic & polychromic cultures; race and access to/achievement
in higher education; the role of language in intercultural competency; cross-cultural training at
the university level; the internationalisation of higher education; social justice; and study
abroad

Day-to-day administration of Alumni Mentoring Scheme, including marketing, recruitment,
applications, matching and monitoring for appropriate communication.
Overhauled scheme to focus on active participation and shared learning outcomes with
success of redesign proven through improved participant feedback.
Responsible for growing the scheme from 15 alumni participants to 60 with approximately
100 student participants each term.

One on one mentor and tutor for English as a Second language migrants, aged 4-12.

Participated in panel hearings with university students, faculty, and administrators for
instances of possible violations to the university Honor Code at the graduate level.

guidance in a live-in capacity.
