Introduction:

Welcome to 6th grade! This year will be a transitional time for students into their teenage years.
Students will be expected to assume a sizable amount of responsibilities. They will learn to
expand their minds and make high-quality Christ-centered choices. Parents will begin to release a
greater amount of decision-making to students as well. We are in it together and I look forward to
working with everyone to grow in all ways. I am excited to be a part of the team! Lets get started!

Sixth Grade Curriculum:

The California Content Standards for sixth grade is available for review at: www.cde.ca.gov. You
can also find a link on our classroom website at: www.glenoakssixthgrade.weebly.com in the
Downloads tab. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) will be introduced as Phase 1 this
year. This is the first stage of integration where schools will start to incorporate the CCSS. You
can also find a link to the Common Core State Standards on the same links mentioned before.

Tests & Quizzes:
After the end of each chapter and cumulative unit, the student will be tested through oral, written,
or observational methods. The student will need to extend study beyond homework practice in
preparation for the exams. There will be a spelling pre-test, on Mondays. Spelling post-tests are
given every Friday. Finals will be given at the end of each trimester. Students are responsible for
scheduling a make-up test for missed exams within 5 school days. All tests, quizzes and projects
will be graded on a point system. (See Grading Policy)

Homework:
Students will be given an average of 60-minutes of work nightly, except on Fridays. However,
students may have additional work if they have not completed class work or need to work on
projects. All assignments must be completed and submitted at the beginning of class. If
homework is not completed, the student will receive a zero. Make-ups are only permitted for
excused absences, in which, the student will have the same number of days missed to complete. It
is the students responsibility to collect all work and homework left on their desks during their
absence for review and completion. All students will have the option to read for 20 minutes in
addition to their nightly homework. They will be required to complete a monthly log that will be
submitted at the end of each month, if they participate. Students will be rewarded according to
the rewards system in place.

Projects:
There will be 4-5 projects this year. The student will be responsible for completing the entire
project with focus on content, resources, presentation (verbal and visual) as well as creativity. A
project information sheet will be given for each project as well as a rubric for the grading with a
due date. The student must type all work. Late or incomplete work will not be accepted and the
student will receive a score of zero.

Absence and Tardy:
Parents or student must notify the teacher prior to a planned extended absence of three days or
more. Students have the number of excused days plus one additional day to make up work.
Please refer to the Parent Student Handbook for further clarification.

Parent-Teacher Communication:
There are several methods of communication that can be utilized. The students will provide
parents with announcements, notes and flyers as a form of school-wide and class communication.
Parents or guardians may also use the methods provided at the beginning of the syllabus as
alternative ways to communicate. Direct verbal communication is also welcomed before or after
school. Appointments can be set up as well, if necessary. Please call the office, if immediate
