Questions

Welding process MMA

QU1.

State the main three welding parameters of the MMA welding process

1. Amperage (I)-control the welding current/ burn-off and depth of penetration.

2. Voltage (V)- control the voltage. Initiate the arc, that is OCV- measure
between the output terminals when current is off/ no current flows. Therefore
control the arc legth.
3. Travel speed. Control the heat input.

QU2.

What type of power source type is considered essential for MMA?

DC+, DC- and AC.

QU3.

Give three advantages of the MMA welding process when compared

to the MAG welding process.

-field of shop use

- range of consumable
-all positional
-very portable
- simple equipment

QU4.

Name the four criteria that will govern the number of fillers in an MMA
welded joint.

Selection of the correct electrode

Selection of the correct size of the electrode for the job
Correct welding current
Correct arc length
Correct angle of electrode to work
Correct travel speed

Correct preparation of work to be welded

QU5.

State two types of electrical supply and give the advantages of each

1. Direct current
2. Alternate current
Direct current- two type
- Electrode positif (DCEP/+) and electrode negative )DCEN/-).
- Generate 2/3 of available of heat energy. Increase the depth of penetration.
- Electrode negative ( DCEN/-)- cuases heat to build up on the electrode, increasing the
electrode tmelting rate and decreasing the depth of the weld penetration. This can
effected arc blow due to magnetic forces.
Alternate current- distribution of heat energy at the arc is equal, 50% athe the electrode and
50% at the workpeace.
