Welcome to Healthy Living 8!

Program Components

The grade 8 program is aimed at encouraging students to live a healthy lifestyle through the critical
examination of issues and topics that are important to them. Some of the topics that may be explored include:
personal health practices and values, healthy relationships, effective communication skills, options related to
unintended pregnancy, birth control, signs of pregnancy and prenatal care, major depressive disorders and
ADD, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS, sexual assault, sexual orientation, benefits and risks of online
technology, body image, and the impacts of, not only setting, but achieving positive personal goals. There are 3
categories that encompass these topics for Healthy Living;
1. Healthy Self
Analyze the relationship between values and personal health practices
Time Management/Healthy Diet
Prevention goals for Down the road in 20, or more, years
Mental health; treatments and outcomes
2. Healthy Relationships
Healthy and unhealthy communication
Peer influence/Bystander role
Effective listening and support for peers
Prenatal care
Teen parenting and options related to unintended pregnancy
3. Healthy Community
Factors surrounding health status
Misconceptions and realities with respect to sexual assault
Online technology and responsible decisions
Media and sexual orientation
Body Image and nutrition
Substance abuse and gambling
Injury prevalence among children and youth in N.S.

Assessment

Students participation is valued and encouraged. Throughout the course students will be given the opportunity
to share their knowledge, opinions, feelings, attitudes, beliefs and values in a safe and respectful classroom
environment. They will engage in group activities and discussions and they will contribute individually with
assignments, projects, journal reflections, quizzes and oral presentations.
Formal Assessment Grade 8 report cards will use a percentage mark.
90-100% - The student demonstrates excellent or outstanding performance in relation to the expected
learning outcomes for this course.
80-89% - The student demonstrates very good performance in relation to the expected learning outcomes for
this course.
70-79% - The student demonstrates good performance in relation to the expected learning outcomes for this
course.
60-69% - The student demonstrates satisfactory performance in relation to the expected learning outcomes
for this course.
50-59% - The student demonstrates minimally acceptable performance in relation to the expected learning
outcomes for this course.
Below 50% - The student has not met minimum requirements in relation to the expected learning outcomes for
this course.
