Course Description:
American Sign Language II is a continuation of ASL I. Students will continue to advance their
already established skills. This class will take a deeper look into Deaf Culture and the history of
ASL while drastically increasing students signing skills.
Pre-requisite:
ASL II Full year of ASL I with a C grade average or special arrangement by instructor.
Course Materials:

Text: A Basic Course in American Sign Language 2nd Edition by Tom Humphries, Carol
Padden, Terrence ORourke. (Provided in class)
Class Handouts will be provided by the instructor
DVDs/Movies related to: Deaf Culture, Poetry, Storytelling, and Deaf History

Course Requirements:
1. Regular attendance and participation are absolutely essential in this course. Without
consistent attendance students will not develop the desired skills. Students will be given
points for showing up to class and participating.
2. Tests will be given to evaluate the students receptive skills, knowledge, and translation
from ASL to English. The tests will be given by the instructor on the test day, if the
student is absent on the test day then either the instructor or a teachers aide will give the
makeup exam.
3. Students will participate in projects to further develop their ASL skills. Some projects
include storytelling, poetry, speeches, and possibly reports.

Below are the components in which grades will be determined for the ASL classes:

Attendance, Participation, Cooperation
Final Exam

Mr. Rolfness Expectations:

I expect students to be in class on time and ready to learn. I expect students to participate in class
and try to learn. I expect students to follow the rules that are set by your peers and Amity faculty.
Rules:

Respect me, Respect the language, and Respect your fellow classmates.
No gum, food, or drinks (water is okay)
Be in class and headed to your seat by the time the bell rings
No cell phones or music devices (all devices are to be placed on my desk or in a
backpack).

Methods of Instruction:
1. Class will be taught in American Sign Language (ASL). In the beginning we will be
using voiced English but as we progress we will be trading our voices for ASL.
Interactions you could have during this class include the following:
a. Signing between instructor and student
b. Signing between student and student
c. Signing and interactions with Deaf-ASL users
d. Signing with students from various College/Universitys
2. The instructor will demonstrate and model the use of ASL
3. We will have lectures/discussions about ASL and Deaf Culture in class
4. Assigned readings outside of class can occur
