PROCEDURE : COLONIC / RECTAL LAVAGE

PURPOSE :

Clean and empty colon before surgical or diagnostic procedure.

REQUIREMENT

1) Colonic washout set –rubble tube, funnel (if not have, use barrel).
2) Rectal tube.
3) Solution as prescribed.
4) Jug.
5) Lubricant (KY jelly).
6) Tissue paper / gauze.
7) Receiver.
8) Disposable gloves.
9) Protective sheet.
10)Connected.

STEPS

1. Greet patient and explain procedure.

2. Provide privacy.
3. Position patient in left lateral.
4. Place protective sheet.
5. Cover patient from waist until foot exposing anus area.
6. Place receiver.
7. Wear disposable gloves.
8. Lubricate distal end of rectal tube about 10-12cm and connect to
rubble tube.
9. Pour solution into funnel to remove air than clamp tubing.
10.Ask patient to take deep breath and insert rectal tube slowly
about 10-12cm.
11.Pour about 500ml fluid into funnel by holding funnel about 40cm
above waist /eye level.
12.Open clamp on the rubble tube.
13.Siphon out fluids into receiver by lowering funnel.
 14.Clamp tube.
15.Repeat steps 11-14 until flow in clean.
16.Clamp tube and remove slowly. Take tissue paper/ gauze and put
under the buttock.
17.Assist patient to defecate.
18.Make patient comfortable.
19.Remove disposable gloves.
20.Clean and clear equipments.
21.Record and report result.

NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Ensure procedure is carried out on correct client at correct site.

2. Reassure client to gain cooperation.
3. Perform procedure in a correct manner to prevent complications.
4. Monitor client intra and post procedure.
5. Ensure client’s comfort is maintained throughout procedure.
6. Record findings and report abnormalities.
